See this enchanting 19th-century church draped in ivy vines in the summer months. Wander inside to admire the original interiors and stained-glass windows.

Martin Luther Church (Martin-Luther-Kirche) is a beautiful old church building that was spared from extensive bomb damage in World War II. Consecrated in 1887 on the 404th birthday of its namesake, the Martin Luther Church opened as a spacious place of worship for the growing district of Dresden Neustadt. Admire the sandstone structure’s neo-Romanesque ornamentation and eye-catching Gothic-style clock tower. Head inside to experience the quiet beauty of its preserved interiors.

Stand back from the church on Martin-Luther-Platz and take in its impressive architecture. At 177 feet (54 meters) in length and 88.5 feet (27 meters) in width, the church is an immense structure. On its western end, a large neo-Gothic tower rises up to a height of 266 feet (81 meters) at the tip of its ornate spire. Note the tower’s rosette window and sandstone reliefs, which depict the four evangelists: John, Matthew, Luke and Mark. If you visit during the summer, you might see the pretty ivy climbing up the tower’s monumental front façade. Stroll around the church to appreciate its beautiful sandstone masonry on all sides.

Step into the church and take in the solemn grandeur of its interiors. The cavernous interior has 1,050 seats arranged in two rows of timber pews. Look up to see the magnificent series of stained-glass windows, which tell the story of Jesus Christ from birth to crucifixion and ascension. The beautiful neo-Romanesque interiors remained intact throughout World War II and have been meticulously restored. Check out the pulpit, which features a relief of the crucifix. Admire the original 19th-century organ, which has been updated and expanded over the decades. The organ is regularly played during church services, concerts and advents.

Martin Luther Church is located on Martin-Luther-Platz in the Dresden Neustadt district of Äußere Neustadt. It is easy to reach via trolleybus. The church is open to visitors between May and October from Monday to Friday. Check with volunteer staff to find out when organ concerts are being held.
