It is just a 140m level stroll to the well known surf beach Sandy Bay which is generally safe for swimming/surfing through all tides and also has a freshwater creek/lagoon for small children to paddle in. The well utilised walking track along the coast to Whananaki starts here for those wanting peaceful exercise.
A short drive will take you to Whale Bay and Matapouri and just a few more kilometers sees you at Tutukaka, the base for all diving and fishing tours heading out to the world famous Poor Knights Islands. You will also find a variety of cafes and eateries at Tutukaka and Ngunguru.

We really enjoyed our short stay at Sandy Bay. Our accommodation (Sandy Bay Barn) was excellent and had everything we needed. Very clean and tidy. It was close to the beach and we would definitely stay there again. Highly recommend this place.

Very clean and quiet area apart from the sound of the surf and native birds. There was everything that you would need and though the barn is situated behind the main house it was very private. Beautiful view of the surf especially from the top story bedroom. Plenty of room for a family.

What a beautiful little place to stay this was! I slept there and the ocean surf nursed me to sleep. Although I arrived very late, Pauline was awesome in communicating with me and there was no hustle for me to get in, sleep and get out. For sure will be back :) Thanks!!

Exactly as I'd hoped. A small beach bach in a rural setting. Nothing luxurious but everything at hand & allowing for a relaxed holiday. We loved the outdoor shelter and spent hours reading, eating and watching the abundant bird life. Simple instructions about what to leave & how. Very comfortable beds with extra linen & bedding easily available. Toys, books, games for happy times together and so close to the beach.

I didn't make it as Cyclone Gabrielle was about to devastate us so I headed home instead. Pauline's communication was awesome and I think she instigated a refund which I wasn't expecting. This refund is going to one of the mayoral relief funds for people affected

It was exactly as advertised and what we had hoped for. The Barn situated in a rural setting just perhaps 20 metres through a paddock onto Sandy Bay, just one of many along the beautiful Tutukaka coast. It was so peaceful yet just a short drive to Whale Bay, Woolleys Bay,Matapouri Bay and Tutukaka. The Barn itself was spacious and very comfortable and well equipped. Plenty of space as well. There looked to be new carpet in the living area, also new curtains. The kitchen provided everything with big fridge freezer, most welcome since shops are not that handy. We loved the whole ambience and will stay longer next summer. Pauline and Ross were very welcoming and we would heartily recommend this place to people who want peace but also enjoy the surfing vibe. For anyone coming from far afield then Whangarei is not too far away, has all the shops, galleries and of course the Hundervasser Museum set in the town basin overlooking the marina.Perfect!

We booked for easter weekend to get away with the kids, unfortunately was not what we expected, no photos were shown online of the out side of the property when we got there we realised it was a converted garage/shed, furniture was old and uncomfortable it was raining during our stay so were inside for the most part. Things were not up to par cleanliness wise, old bar of soap and hair in the shower, one of the door handles were faulty so when the door was closed the room was inaccessible. Ran out of hot water on the second day gas supplied by the looks of things. On a positive note the area was great, great access to the beach and a lovely spot.
