About this property
Welcome to our Rock Creek Fortress of Solitude.
Our cabin is nestled in the Sapphire Range of Lolo National Forest about halfway between Philipsburg and the Rock Creek Lodge, 20 miles east of Missoula.
It’s easily accessible year-round, and every season is spectacular in its own way. Winter access is from the Philipsburg side ONLY, as much of the Missoula side is not maintained.
The cabin has 2 bedrooms on the main (2nd) floor, each with a queen bed. The 200 square foot loft has a queen bed and a twin bed. On the ground floor there’s a room with another queen bed and a twin roll-away. The photos make it look larger, but know that the ground floor and second floor are each about 850 square feet. (24’ x 36’). The interior stairs are steep and wide, so if you have small kids, you should know that.
The bathroom on the main floor has a tub/shower, toilet and sink. The bathroom on the ground floor has a shower, toilet and sink. Laundry facilities are on the main floor.
The main floor has a living area with a couch, loveseat a chair, a TV/DVD player, a dining table that seats 6-8, and a fully stocked kitchen. There’s no dishwasher. There is a second kitchen in the garage. The garage is more party zone than garage. There’s a sitting area with 2 couches and a cart converted into an awesome coffee table in the garage.
Other features include a 430 square foot deck with a table with room for 6. There’s also a propane fire pit with seating for 4 and 4 other chairs.
In the warmer months, there’s an outdoor shower with on-demand hot water that you just won’t want to leave.
A 6-foot fire ring gives you plenty of room to get everyone around the fire. For smaller gatherings, the portable 3-foot fire pit works much better. There’s also a propane fire pit on the deck. There’s a propane grill on the deck for outdoor cooking.
Please note that there’s NO computer, NO WiFi, NO cell service and NO cable TV, but there is a landline.
There is a SiriusXM satellite radio boom box, or you can connect your device to the Bose TV speaker. We also have 30 or so DVD’s along with board games, cards and cribbage boards.
Luckily, you’re likely not here to sit inside and look out the window. Rock Creek is famous for excellent fishing. We have Rainbow, Brown, Brook, and Cutthroat Trout. Our cabin isn’t on the creek, but public access is a 3-minute walk upstream. The Wyman trailhead is a quarter mile downstream. It’s popular with anglers, hikers, and it’s a great place to play in the water. Other trails are nearby to offer opportunities for hikers to enjoy the area.
In addition to the fish, you’re also likely to see deer, sheep, eagles, owls, bats at dusk, and moose. If you’re lucky, you might see an elk or a bear.
So bring your raft, drift boat, tubes or kayaks and get in the water! Note that you cannot fish from a boat after June 30, but you can still float the creek. People will tell you otherwise (some of them quite sternly and even aggressively), but they’re misreading the fishing regulations. There’s typically enough water to float until the 2nd or 3rd week of July. With few others floating the creek, you’ll likely have it all to yourself.
If you choose to visit in the colder months, you may enjoy sitting inside the warm cabin watching it snow. Curling up with a book, watching a movie or playing games are great ways to pass the time on cold winter days. During the winter, you’ll only see a handful of vehicles pass in a day. It’s really quiet.
Philipsburg, voted one of America’s Prettiest Painted Places, is a 45 minute drive and features the great Philipsburg Brewing Company, several restaurants, the Sweet Palace Candy Store, Gem Mountain Sapphire Gallery and small town shopping.
Discovery Basin Ski Area is only 45 miles away, (about an hour and fifteen minute drive).
The Skalkaho Road is 18 miles upstream and offers a beautiful but slow drive to Hamilton. Skalkaho Falls is spectacular in the spring. There’s also a sapphire mine where you can find your own stones. The Skalkaho Road is a great place to spend an afternoon.
We’re dog friendly, but please control them as there are other dogs in the neighborhood.
Finally, we have a very minimal cleaning fee that almost covers the cost of fuel to drive out there to clean. We ask that guests leave the cabin as they found it.

The cabin was perfectly setup for three couples to stay. We spent time on the deck and down in the party room/garage. Absolutely would stay again next time we visit the area!
The property is well appointed and has all that is needed for a comfortable stay.
The porch was great. The fishing out back was great, and the neighbors were accommodating.
Lovely cabin and great location on Rock Creek. The cabin is spacious and well appointed. Close to good fishing options. Owners are excellent. Very peaceful and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Highly recommend!
This was our second time back at the property and we couldn’t have had a better time! The location is a perfect disconnect! We will be coming back again next year!!
Perfect spot for a base during a Rock Creek fly fishing trip. Hot showers, comfortable beds and a nice cool lower floor to escape the afternoon heat. The deck with the propane fire table makes for a nice finish to a great day.
It had been almost 25 years since I had stayed somewhere so remote, and frankly I was skeptical because I was bringing along my 6 and 9 year olds, but it worked. I mean, really worked! Our family genuinely had a magical time. This was a clear reminder that we don’t need our phones, wi-fi, cable tv, or any other contemporary distraction for that matter. The cabin itself is equipped with everything you need and then some. The beds, couches, and showers are all top notch. I don’t even have that kind of water pressure at home! I’ll stop here because I could easily go on and on. This is a property we’ll return to for years to come. Thank you, Rosenleafs!
We've stayed here several times. Its always a great trip. Saw lots of wildlife-a mountain lion, a bear, deer, elk, moose, a mink. A very nice place to stay if you're in the area. The owners are great as well
Loved the property, scenery and just overall experience! We all had an amazing time, there’s no phone service or wifi, which we didn’t mind at all honestly made us enjoy even more. The River was great to get in, and we saw long horn goats and a moose! Great place would definitely come again.
This place was very cozy/comfortable and we had a lot of fun. Close to the river with great scenery and wildlife. The owners made sure we were well taken care of and very comforting. We would definitely come again.
We loved our stay in this beautiful cabin. It was the perfect size for our group of 8. Mark was incredibly communicative, flexible, and generous with our time there. Definitely look forward to returning!
We had a wonderful time at this cabin. It was clean and comfortable and oh so roomy! It's just off-the-beaten-path enough to get away from it all, but close enough to everything we wanted to do. Of course, the main attraction was the fishing on Rock Creek. But we also saw incredible wildlife, ate out in Philipsburg and hiked on nearby trails. The owners were incredibly accommodating, responsive and easy to work with. We will definitely stay here again, and recommend this place to anyone looking to get away from it all.
The cabin was plenty big and comfortable for our group of 6 and we loved using the fire pit. The stay exceeded all of our expectations and was highlighted by the amazing hiking trails nearby. We wanted to experience some beautiful mountain scenery and that’s exactly what we got. I highly recommend staying here as the owners were very helpful throughout the whole process!
We had a great weekend at Mark and Heidi's Cabin! It has everything you could ever need, was clean, and had lots of options for hanging out. We walked down the road to the fishing access everyday and had a good time fishing! Highly recommend!
Mark and Heidi have a wonderful cabin to explore Rock Creek. Two complete kitchens provide unlimited cooking choices.
The beds were comfortable.
The neighbors are very friendly and allowed us access to the river.
We’ll definitely be back!
Such a great place for a few close friends to get away for the weekend! Lots of room, everything you need in the kitchen (including some absolutely beautiful cast iron cookware), and comfy beds to recover from all the fun. Thank you Mark and Heidi!
Amazing atmosphere awesome cabin, short trip to discovery for some great snowboarding. The place was perfect Mark has a fantastic house and property we definitely enjoyed our stay and would definitely come back!
