Moe

Travel Guide

Be transported back to the 1850s in an authentic heritage park, explore beautiful bushland reserves and coast along a rail trail cycleway in this charming Gippsland town.

A historic town in the western end of the Latrobe Valley, Moe has gold rush heritage interwoven into its 19th-century architecture, rural farmsteads, railway relics and scenic surrounding bushland. Learn about the region’s fascinating history at the Gippsland Heritage Park, walk or cycle along relaxing rail trails or chill out to sultry jazz tunes at the Moe Music Festival.

Moe is best known for its fascinating time-warp heritage park, Old Gippstown. Find yourself in the 1850s and explore the authentic historical village’s buildings and gardens. Visit the General Store, Water Wheel Garden, old-fashioned police station and doctor’s office to see relics from life in the Australian outback in the 19th century. Book to see black-and-white movies at the Tynong Theatre or check out relics of agricultural and industrial machinery, such as horse-drawn carriages, at the Coach House.

Explore to the east of Moe’s town centre to find the Moe Botanical Gardens, which is split by the meandering Narracan River. Embark on a walking or cycling tour of the Moe to Yallourn Rail Trail. The relatively flat trail begins at the Moe Botanical Gardens and goes past bushland, rural estates and Lake Narracan, finishing at the Yallourn power station, 8 kilometres (4.9 miles) away. Lake Narracan is a popular local spot for swimming, water skiing, boating and fishing.

Take a trip to the Edward Hunter Heritage Bush Reserve to see beautiful eucalyptus forest, spot native birds and traverse walking trails to scenic picnic areas. Join the locals at a horse race at the Moe Racing Club or at the Ted Summerton Reserve for a match of cricket or Australian Rules football.

Moe is located in Gippsland, approximately 1.5-hours’ drive from Melbourne, Victoria’s capital city. Victoria’s regional V/Line services reach Moe from Melbourne city within 1 hour and 40 minutes. While in Moe, be sure to try the region’s wines and dairy products, including cheeses and ice creams. Moe is also an excellent jumping-off point for visiting Victoria’s historic Goldfields region and towns such as Walhalla, or the nearby snowfields of Mount Baw Baw Alpine Resort. In March, enjoy an excellent line up of local and interstate acts at the Moe Music Festival.
