Use the audio guide to learn about historic and modern Native American art and sip wine at a live music event.

Montclair Art Museum (MAM) is a historic gallery with a focus on American, Native American and contemporary art. It first opened in 1914 and now holds more than 12,000 works of art. Take a tour of this important gallery for a glimpse of its intriguing sculptures, photographs, paintings and prints.

Admire the imposing columns and strong, white pediment of the building’s façade. In front of this neoclassical structure is a circular lawn containing the bronze statue by famous sculptor Hermon Atkins MacNeil. Enter the building and wander through the eclectic range of exhibits, including a gallery entirely devoted to 19th-century painter George Inness.

See pieces around the museum by such acclaimed artists as Andy Warhol. Inspect the fascinating works in the Native American Collection, displaying an array of historic basketry and jewelry alongside contemporary works. Audio guides explain the context and details behind the exhibits. Check the schedule of upcoming traveling displays, which tend to be in place for several months.

Snap photos of your favorite works of art. Flash photography, however, is not permitted. Browse the Store at MAM for a great range of gifts, products for the home, jewelry and toys, among other intriguing items.

Go to a Free First Thursday Nights occasion for live music, tours and workshops from October through June. Attend one of the many events held throughout the year, including art-themed wine tastings, art-house movie screenings and in-depth analyses of particular styles.

The gallery and store open from Wednesday through Sunday from noon until late afternoon. There is an entry fee, with discounts for seniors and students. Children enter for free.

The Montclair Art Museum is in the central part of Montclair in northern New Jersey. Take a bus to a nearby stop or ride the train to Walnut Street Station, a 1-mile (1.6-kilometer) walk east from the museum. Visit other sights in the district, such as the Van Vleck House & Gardens, the Charles Shultz House and the Immaculate Conception Church.
