Morrisville

Travel Guide

In the 1930s, in an effort to keep floodwaters at bay, the civilian conservation corps built an earthen weir to protect the borough of Morrisville between the two automobile bridges. The land on the river side of that weir affords calm, quiet views of the river and of neighboring Trenton. In view is the Calhoun St. Bridge.

A corn syrup transfer station, there was a long past time when it manufactured the product. Today the production facilities sit unused, occupied only by animals.

Summerseat came from humble beginnings, much like its builder, Adam Hoops. However, Hoops' daughter would marry Thomas Barclay, who would become the first US consul to a foreign nation after the first suggested consul boarded a ship set for France and was never heard from again. The Barclays sold the house to Robert Morris who was in the process of financing the American Revolution before he sold the property to George Clymer, a fellow patriot who signed both the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution. Robert Morris did both of those things as well, and it remains, to this day, the only house in the universe that was owned by two signers of both the declaration and the constitution, as well as the Morrisville Historical Society. According to the plaque, Hoops was so humble that he doesn't even get credit for building the sucker, nor for supplying the british forces during the French and Indian war. December 8-14, 1776, the house would host general George Washington, a week and a half before he would assail Trenton, NJ, on the way to turning the tide in that war, and securing America's place as the world's newest country, at least for a little while. #lovemytown
