Admire the neo-Romantic façade of this historic theater that played a role in the Finnish cultural movement of the 19th century.

The National Theater is a historic structure with four stages that host a large portion of the city’s dramatic arts scene. The organization, which was initially a travelling group, is the oldest Finnish-speaking theater in the country, dating back to 1872. Admire the impressive façade, with its red turrets, green dome and intricate details.

Note that the building, which was designed by architect Onni Törnqvist-Tarjanne, is of the neo-Romantic design popular in the 1800s in Finland. Attend a performance presented on the Main Stage, which has a seating capacity of 885. It has a majestic décor with elaborate golden balconies and rows of red seats. The Small Stage seats 307 people, the Willensauna Stage has room for 154 spectators and the intimate setting of Omapohja Studio has a capacity of just 80.

Watch an international work or a take on a classic Greek or Roman piece. See avant-garde performances or a local play in the Finnish language. Enjoy a meal at the Morkku Café, which serves breakfast, snacks and lunch. The theater contains a small shop with souvenirs and gifts with a theater theme.

Learn about the history of the organization, which was established at a time when the country was part of the Russian Empire and Swedish was the language of the intellectual elite. This Finnish-speaking theater is eternally linked to a cultural movement for independence.

Inspect the statue of Finnish writer Aleksis Kivi that stands on the plaza in front of the theater. See the fountain by the northern side of the theater and relish the lively ambiance of the square.

The theater’s box office is open Monday through Saturday from morning until the evening. Purchase your tickets online, by phone or at the theater.

The National Theater is on the northern flank of the Helsinki Central Railway Square in the center of the city. Take the metro to Kaisaniemi Station or the train to the railway station that stands beside the theater. Nearby landmarks include the Kaisaniemi Park, Helsinki University and Helsinki Cathedral.
