Venture to the northern stretches of New Jersey to find abundant nature, close-up views of Manhattan and some impressive museums.

North Jersey lies next to Manhattan, New York, stretching down through picturesque mountains and forests to the central portion of the state. New Jersey is one of the smallest states in the country, yet it offers an impressive variety of things to do. Get outside and discover waterfalls and hikes, learn about the local culture and history or seek out intriguing museums.

Jersey City neighbors Manhattan, the towering skyscrapers providing an impressive panorama. Don’t miss Liberty State Park, where outdoor concerts, bike trails and acres of open space all offer views of that unmistakable skyline. Hop on a ferry to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty where immigrants took their first steps on U.S. soil or visit the historic railroad terminal that routed them to their new homes. The Liberty Science Center is also worth visiting.

For more science, tour the Thomas Edison National Historical Park in West Orange. Discover Glenmont, the inventor’s impressive 29-room Queen Anne-style mansion.

Newark is known for its large international airport and acts as the main entry point to the state. Another highlight of the city is the Newark Museum, housing a distinctive Tibetan art collection. See the Buddhist altar that was consecrated by the 14th Dalai Lama.

Known as the Garden State, North Jersey is blanketed in forests and hills, perfect for exploring. Towns such as Mahwah act as the gateway to outdoor pursuits. Enjoy cycling, hiking and birdwatching along the trails and paths.

In the northernmost corner of the state Sussex County also offers nature in abundance. Hike through High Point State Park or splash around in Mountain Creek Water Park in the summer. Spend winters skiing in Hidden Valley Ski Resort or Mountain Creek Resort.

Newark International Airport is convenient for North Jersey travel. You can also choose one of New York’s airports. Highways are fast and efficient through the state. Travel along the back roads to appreciate the landscape and small communities.
