Constructed for the 2008 Summer Olympics, this hub of stadiums and sporting arenas features the landmark Bird’s Nest Stadium, a water park and mall.

See the futuristic side of China at Beijing’s contemporary Olympic Park. Take photos of the world-famous Bird’s Nest venue, let the kids play in the water park and watch the light show at night. In 2008, Beijing came into the global spotlight as the host of the Olympic and Paralympic games. Elaborate sporting and accommodation facilities were built. Although the athletes are long gone, millions of people still come to see the site each year. Olympic Park has since become a symbol for Beijing’s drive towards a modern representation of China.Olympic Park is huge. It covers a total area of 3,000 acres (1,215 hectares) and has a canal and green spaces running through its grounds. Follow the walkway, which cuts through the complex, to admire the innovative architecture.Sports fans can visit the sites where Olympic history was made. The dramatic National Stadium steals the show. This structure is nicknamed the Bird’s Nest because the woven steel beams that cover its exterior look like the twigs in a bird’s nest. This stadium hosted the opening and closing Olympic ceremonies. Venture inside and rent a Segway to glide around the tracks. Standing next to the Bird’s Nest is the Beijing National Aquatics Center. These days you can splash around on slides and rides in this former Olympic pool complex. Swim in the lazy river, dive in the wave pool, go for a ride or dine in the restaurant. Stay until nightfall and watch the pool complex transform as the interior lights illuminate the transparent exterior. The whole park is lit up at night and a light show follows the rhythms of a live orchestra.Olympic Park is located in Beijing's Chaoyang District. To reach the park, take the subway to Olympic Green or Olympic Sports Center. Many city bus lines also service the park. Tickets are necessary to enter most of the stadiums and attractions.
