The Baltic Sea resort of Baabe is the smallest of the Baltic Sea resorts on Rügen. With its charming location on the Baaber Heide, nestled between Lake Sellin and the Baltic Sea, Baabe is an ideal holiday destination. The village lies at the entrance to the Mönchgut Peninsula, marked by the Mönchgut Gate.
Until the mid-19th century, Baabe was just a farm with several fishermen’s cottages. But by the end of the 19th century, more and more holidaymakers were arriving. The first simple swimming facility with a swimming pier opened in 1896. In 1913, a large men’s, women’s, and family swimming area was added.
In the 1920s and 1930s, the village experienced a real boom. The grand tree-lined avenue through the village was built, along with a village church and a swimming facility. With government grants and new investors, many of the buildings were renovated starting in 1990, and quite a few villas in the traditional seaside resort style were also built.
