We had a wonderful stay. The house is located on a beautiful one lane road along the coast. There is a path leading down to the ocean, but you can see the spray of the waves hitting the cliffs from the house. The house was great. The kitchen was well equipped. When you open the windows a cool breeze blows through. The lanai was spacious.
We enjoyed everything about our stay at this place! Starting from the drive into the house through a mystical beautiful forest, the cliffs behind the house are a such a lovely way to start the day, the great lanai to watch the ocean and hear the waves crashing and all of it! Kitchen was well stocked with everything we needed, water was hot, A/C is only in the living room (rooms all have a fan). We liked the nearby town of Pahoa a lot (check out the thai place on the main street). Would definitely stay again!
Terry communicated with us very well, and even though there were some unexpected circumstances, she was understanding and cooperative. I would definitely stay at one of her properties again!
This home has stunning views! 6 of us enjoyed everything the home has to offer; the private pool with the waterfall/fountain, the large deck overlooking the ocean, the short 2-minute walk to the ocean cliffs, the large open living space, and each couple was very comfortable in their bedroom. Driving up to the property after dark was enjoyable hearing the waves and tree frogs surrounding us, truly felt very secluded. There is one friendly neighbor next door that stopped to say hi to us. It is a bit of a drive to some of the sights as mentioned in previous reviews, but we felt like we were in our own world alone, and still able to fit a lot in during our stay. Absolutely recommend the Botanical Garden's! The drive up to Mauna Kea just before sunset (would recommend leaving by 3pm to get up there in time for stargazing) was incredible! Also enjoyed a few local restaurants and bars at the recommendation of Terry and the neighbor. Would love to stay at this home again if we make it back to the Big Island. This home provided everything we needed for the stay!
This was the perfect peaceful getaway after staying in busy Honolulu. The house was very nice with great views. It was everything we wanted it to be and more. The neighbors were very nice an the walk to the cliffs was short with amazing views, We would definitely stay here again.
Great property. Grand kiddos loved pool ages 9 and 7. Terry was very easy to work with. If we come to paradise again will stay here. Thanks u The Fischers and Pluth from Minnesota
Very secluded. A little out of the way but well worth the drive. Ocean views and walks along the cliffs were amazing. Property was very clean, well appointed. Property manager was very helpful and provided a thorough list of things to do. Nothing but good things to say about this property.
Wonderful escape - beautiful location, spacious and comfortable house
We loved our ocean view, hearing the waves and relaxing in/by the pool. Nestled close to the coast in a natural setting, the house provides comfort, convenience and space to escape and relax. Off the beaten path, it is a little slice of paradise to which we'd return in a heartbeat.
First evening on the deck we were visited by several wales very close by.
Just got better from there. The pool was awesome and we enjoyed it much more than I expected. A very relaxing and quiet place.
We certainly want to come back here again.
Thank you for sharing this special place.
The home is gorgeous for location and for amenities. It was hard to make ourselves leave that porch to see the sights. The views from the backyard cliff... spectacular. We could've stayed a month!
I it was our fourth stay at Kai Malolo and the property never disappoints. We love it!
The house is lovely, and the grounds are beautiful~~and the ocean views are spectacular! We saw breaching whales and baby whales, Honu (sea turtles) from the lava rock lookout. The pool is great as well and could only be better if there was a handrail. We will be back!
We stayed at Kai Malolo for the first part of our Big Island vacation, it was a wonderful home base to get to Volcano National Park, black sand beaches, and Hilo.
The home was clean and welcoming when we arrived and had lots of extra amenities. The propery was gorgeous with breath taking views.
It was hard for us to sleep with the windows open at night due to the coqui frogs, so we were thankful for the air conditioning along with extra house fans that kept us cool on warmer evenings.
We loved the home and it was a wonderful stay!
We loved the house. It had everything we needed and was very clean. We loved the pool and the closeness to the ocean. Sitting on the lanai, listening to the ocean was amazing. Communication with Terry wasn’t necessary often but very easy when needed. Highly recommend. If we return we would definitely look to stay here again. Great experience all around!!!
We absolutely loved this property. Wonderful home and very, very comfortable. Fully equipped for great cooking and relaxation. Very friendly dog next door would come to check us out. He however did like to bark beginning at 5:30 in the am but they were short lasting sessions. The pool was incredible and we loved every moment here. Would recommend to anyone. No bugs or even mosquitos and lovely trades. Spent lots of time on the lanai in ultra comfort. We thank you for making this available and would love to come back....5 stars...
Shhh...don't tell anybody, but this is the PERFECT Hawaiian retreat on the whole island. We've done the resort thing and the beach house thing, but this secluded home on the lava cliffs is everything. Just stunning! We loved Kai Malolo!
The hosts thought of everything to make this our home away from home - plenty of towels, well-appointed kitchen, labeled cabinets for easability, lots of games for rainy days and the refreshing pool - with a waterfall - for sunny days! There were even yoga mats and weights available.
Cleanliness was top notch and we felt extremely safe and secure. We'll miss falling asleep to the sounds of coqui frogs and crashing waves. The lush flora and ocean views with our own private sea arch (prettier than the one at Volcano National Park) is breathtaking.
The neighbor dogs barked a quick, friendly hello, but were not disruptive or a nuisance in any way - we actually enjoyed having them around! We found the chickens, birds, geckos, and mongoose on property entertaining and saw beautiful peacocks strolling on the winding road to the house.
We are regular VRBO users when traveling and this was the best property we've stayed in. So, go ahead and tell people about it if you must. Just don't rent it when we want to visit (haha)...because when we return to the big island one day, we'd love to stay here again! Mahalo!
This is a beautiful property. It is well appointed and the kitchen has all of the utensils you will need and some basics. The gas grill was apparently new and gets good and hot for delicious dinners. The rooms are good sized. We enjoyed the views from the deck as well as our on the rocks by the ocean. As indicated in the listing the surf is too rough for swimming but the waves crashing and splashing way up in the air were spectacular. The pool is very nice and the “stools” are a good place to sit and drink while enjoying the view. Communications with the owner and staff were great. The location is a bit remote / secluded. The neighbors dogs were not a problem (unlike other reviews). We did have decent internet service at the house even though our cell coverage was pretty poor. So make sure you have the info (directions and combination codes) downloaded or printed so you can get in w/o phone access. The house is “off the grid solar” and we had plenty of power at all times without the backup generator needing to kick in, even with pretty overcast days. I would definitely recommend this property.
We are regular users of VBRO and other home sharing organizations , and this is one of the best places we’ve ever stayed (probably THE best). Off the beaten path for sure, but certainly not in the middle of nowhere, either (we went into Pahoa and had an exceptional meal at a local restaurant , for example, and the grocery store in town is outstanding and only 10-15 minutes away).
So quiet except for the sounds of nature including the
crashing surf. House itself is immaculate, spacious, well-appointed kitchen should have everything you need. Pool is terrific, especially with the water features running during the day. Even the front of the house where you drive up to the garage is beautifully landscaped.
For being surrounded by essentially a rain forest setting, there were virtually no bugs in the house whatsoever – very impressive. There is a quick and easy pathway to the shoreline which is a bona fide wow-factor, with surf crashing
up on the rocks below.
There is one house right next door, but it is fairly well blocked by foliage. There have been comments here about dogs barking. On our first day, we did note three dogs there but they started barking only when we were headed back up the path from the ocean, which is essentially right in front of their house (even though it is dual-use between the two houses). We didn’t hear any noise from them after that – we don’t know if the neighbors went somewhere or what happened, but it was perfectly fine and quiet.
For us the bed was very comfortable – we like the mattress on the firmer side but it certainly shouldn’t be off-putting to anyone.
The only note of caution we would have is if someone planned on partially working from here. The WIFI service was spotty, and if we were hybrid working (which fortunately we were not) it would not have sufficed. We had anticipated slow internet while in Hawaii so had brought our own MIFI with us; the MIFI couldn't get good coverage either. But really, shouldn’t you be enjoying the
ocean, the pool, and a good book instead?
If we ever return to the Big Island, we would absolutely scramble to stay here again. It was a highlight of
our three-island trip and like a home away from home (but much better than suburban DC!) and a real gem on the quieter side of the island. We couldn’t recommend it strongly enough.
We are quiet people and like being away from tourist places. This home was perfect! The views are beautiful, the breeze delightful and had everything we needed. We never used the a/c and loved the front lanai!!! My favorite was listening to the coqui frogs sing me to sleep. We hope to return and stay here again!
We had a really good stay at Kai Malolo. The location was amazing, with dramatic ocean views and a fabulous pool. (Be prepared for a bit of dog barking and early-morning rooster crowing!) The property manager's communication was quick and their suggestions for things to do - Akaka waterfalls, Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens, Volcano park, drive from Kalapana to Isaac Hale - were spot on. Mahalo!
We loved Kai Malolo so much the first time, we had to come back. Good to see the new rail to assist ingress and egress for the pool! The tree limbs were trimmed back for a better view of the ocean. Always a pleasure to stay here and can’t wait to get back!
