About this property
As close as you can get to the ocean south of Chincoteague
Please feel free to write if you have questions. Unlike Chincoteague, this is a rural setting - the neighborhood is eight houses along Metompkin Bay. But it's an easy half-hour trip to Chincoteague if you'd rather go to the beach there. Our beach is a 15-minute kayak trip away (there are SIX kayaks included in the renta, paddles, and various size life jacketsl). There are also lot of little creeks in the marsh to explore by kayak. If you have a boat, there's a public boat ramp close by.
Our neighbors often fish in the bay, and surf fishing is great at certain times of year. We have crab traps - the crabbing is pretty good off the dock. If you are birders, there are all sorts of places to go (just ask me)! Onancock (10 minutes away) is where we go for nice restaurants and charming little shops. Lots of other attractions are shown in this listing.
We have decks all over the place - two on the water side and one on the land side, in addition to a screened porch - lovely views in all directions. The house is almost all windows on the water side, to take advantage of these wonderful views. The living room/dining room/kitchen is open plan and on the water side of the house. A bedroom, bath, and second bedroom/TV room are on the road side of the house. The bathroom houses a washer and drier that are hidden behind doors. The master bedroom, (loft) and bath occupy the upstairs, and have an even better view of the marshes, bay, and even a glimpse of the ocean! The bottom floor is a garage, and has a laundry sink and extra refrigerator.

The host was amazingly accommodating to a change in our schedule as well as very responsive to our inquiries. The house has just about everything you could need for a stay. The location is great but the view………I could have stayed on the deck for the entire visit.
Our family loved our time together at this awesome house. The house was stocked with everything that we could want. We had a great time with the kayaks and fishing off the dock. We can't wait to come back.
We had a wonderful time at this beautifully appointed home. Everything was just as advertised. Six kayaks, gas grill, beautiful view and great kitchen/dining areas. Our hostess was wonderful to us.
The home itself is stunning! Clean, well decorated, comfortable, with lots of space! The views from all floors is unreal - so gorgeous! Collette was also so kind and responsive. We had an amazing stay at this house!
A couple girlfriends and I booked this property for a weekend getaway to disconnect. This property was perfect to sit and enjoy the views and de stress. Will definitely book again!
180 degree view of Metompkin Bay and Ocean beyond the dunes! Sunrises were awesome! Wildlife delightful. Very quiet and secluded. Nicely equipped with everything and more that you might need or want.
I will be back!
The house was lovely and the location was peaceful. The house came equipped with everything and was very well stocked. We did lots of kayaking as well as fishing and crabbing from the dock. We did day trips to Cape Charles, Chincoteague/Assateague Islands, and the Virginia Aquarium. Collette had great communication with us.
What can we say that others haven't said...
If you're an avid birder, love the waterfront and you love the quiet...this is the place to stay.
House is well equipped.
We will be back...
Absolutely stunning views. Pictures do not do it justice. Relaxing and quiet. Even the neighbors are the nicest. From high tide to low tide, from sunrise to sunset, from moon rise to moon set and everything in between was beyond what we thought it could be. Can’t wait to come back!
Stayed three nights. Amazing views over the marsh, sightings of eagles, willets, skimmers, sandpipers, plovers, and more without leaving the house. Super clean home, well stocked and welcoming. Quite remote, Just the way we like it. Host could not have between more responsive and helpful.
Colette was very friendly and accommodating. Her home and property is gorgeous and very well stocked. We spent 3 nights. 1 day we explored Chincoteague by bike and the second day we explored Cape Charles. We should have stayed longer to kayak and explore the creeks, bay and barrier islands. We spent every night star gazing and every day enjoying the beautiful scenery, nature, birds and wildlife. Thank you Colette for sharing your amazing home💕
Beautiful, comfortable, well maintained home with spectacular views of the marshes and tidal water of the Virginia Eastern Shore. The peace and quiet of this home is only broken by the gentle sounds of the wind and birds. The sunrises are spectacular. The kitchen is well equipped so bring your own food to cook or take advantage of the fresh local seafood. Couldn't have asked for a better getaway.
The house was perfect for our family’s long weekend stay in April 2024. The location is splendid for its views, water accessibility and peace and quiet. We kayaked to the barrier island (approx.15 min) and found many pristine whelk sea shells. We thoroughly enjoyed crabbing and fishing in the creek as well bird watching. The homeowners really have provided just about everything you could ask for as far as amenities and supplies. Additionally they were very helpful and informative when we had questions. We will definitely be staying here again!
This was our second stay and we will keep coming back! The home itself is lovely and had EVERYTHING we needed. Very well stocked, clean, and organized. Incredible views and peaceful and quiet. We only heard birds and the ocean in the distance. Great kayaking, biking, and walking! The sunrises, sunsets, the moon, and the stars gave us something we will never forget. Thank you for sharing your home with us and to Colette for making our stay hassle free.
The owners were extremely friendly and the beautiful house was filled with art. We had everything we needed for comfort, including a well-stocked kitchen that we cooked meals in as we do at home. The many windows and balconies presented expansive views of ever-changing tides, skies and birds. Kayaking to the ocean beach was special: a perfect 40 minute or so paddle. The beach is virtually untouched by humans so it is private with an abundant amount of interesting seashells.
We were there for a week and never felt so relaxed and inspired. We hope to return for another visit.
The house was impeccably clean and especially well-appointed for cooking/serving. Beautifully decorated, comfortable beds. Everything you could need is there. Outdoors was stunning. We fished and crabbed (successfully!) off the dock, soaked in the sun and the stars on the deck, kayaked out for a day at the beach and spent a day at Chincoteague and Assateague seashore. It was a dream. We couldn't have had a better time! Thanks for such a rare and wonderful spot!
We really enjoyed our stay at this little slice of paradise! The views from the screened in porch or the back decks we’re just beautiful. It truly is a birders paradise with bald eagles, purple Martins, Barnes swallows, mockingbird, willets And an abundance of shorebirds. The house was very well stocked including hand soap, dish soap, paper towels, toilet paper, coffee filter and much more. I did bring my own kayaks but really didn’t need to because there were nice ones there for guest use. The house was clean and very comfortable. The upper loft bedroom has its own bathroom upstairs with great views from its own balcony. As with every other place on the eastern shore come prepared
With good bug spray to deal with biting bugs when outside. We were there before the horseflies got too bad and there was typically a good breeze when sitting outside on the decks. Pretty much everything that you could need is there for the kitchen and cooking which I was very surprised with. It was a very peaceful and relaxing trip and I would definitely come again!
Amazing panoramic views! Super interesting artwork throughout as well. The home has literally everything one could possibly need. Close enough to Chincoteague to enjoy part or full day trips to white sandy beach [without ANY hotels!!], small town shopping, etc. An evening at the tiki bar with DJ, games, food, and drinks was a blast. Back at the home, several kayaks were avaliable for use and did get used. [Know that it can a tad challenging for those unfamiliar with tidal basins, related currents, and entering/exiting kayak from a floating dock.] The young adults did appreciate their kayaking adventure though! Also watched as the next door neighbors pulled in a few larger fish at high tide in the evenings. Grilling out on the front lawn was enjoyable. If you love birds, this is heaven.
A great way to spend a few days unwinding with nature at your fingertips!! :)
Of all the VRBO rentals we’ve had this was our favorite. It was very enjoyable for our family of four. The area is very secluded and the only sound you hear during the day are the Purple Martins and only the ocean waves crashing in the distance can be heard at night. We really enjoyed kayaking to the beach and having the entire coast to ourselves.
The views from the house are amazing, especially at sunrise and sunset. Even my 14-year-old son commented that it looked more like a painting than real life. The “view” at night is just as entertaining. We would often have clear skies overhead (showing brilliant stars) while watching lightning dance across the ocean on the horizon.
The house is very comfortable and well stocked with everything you need, especially the kitchen, allowing us to cook in many nights. The master suite doesn’t offer much privacy from downstairs but that didn’t bother us.
The only drawbacks are that there is not much to do in this area and the Greenhead flies will eat you alive in the yard (though, they tend to leave you alone on the deck). My two teenage boys needed a fun day so we made the short drive to Chincoteague for a day of go-carts, etc. Another nearby daytrip was an ecotour out of Wachapreague.
We love this setting and fully intend to come back some day. If you enjoy nature and the ocean, without the boardwalk crowds, then it would be hard to beat this location. The only thing I would recommend is a ping pong table in the basement/garage.
