One of Norway’s most breathtaking mountains towers above this pretty town, which was given the status of a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its industrial history.
Framed by mountain peaks and set along the banks of the Måna river is Rjukan. A popular destination for outdoor adventures, Rjukan is also one part of the UNESCO-protected Rjukan-Notodden Industrial Site. Wander the streets to discover reminders of the town’s hydro-electric industry. Ride cable cars to spectacular viewpoints, partake in heart pumping snow sports and see a magnificent feat of engineering.
Visit the Norwegian Industrial Workers Museum for a glimpse into the industrial past. Set in the former Vemork power plant, it tells the story of the World War II sabotage, when heroic Norwegian and Allied forces prevented German troops from developing the nuclear bomb. Outside is a statue of Samuel Eyde, a pioneer of the nation’s hydropower production. Nearby Rjukan Falls provided the water supply for the power plant.
From the town center you can enjoy uninterrupted views of Hardangervidda and other mountains. Look for the Sun Mirror, a group of three 183-square-feet (17-square-meter) mirrors standing on the mountainside. The purpose is to reflect sunlight over the town square in winter prior to their creation the town experienced months of almost 24-hour darkness. A short walk to the east the Tinn Museum has examples of Norwegian architecture from medieval times to the 20th century.
Spend a day drinking in the unrivalled panoramas from the summit of Gaustatoppen mountain. On a clear day the views reach for up to 125 miles (201 kilometers) and the west coast of Sweden. Reach the summit via the Gaustabanen funicular or via a hiking trail that starts in Stavsro. The Krossobanen cable car travels to the base of Hardangervidda National Park, an area of natural beauty crisscrossed by a network of hiking and skiing trails.
For more snowy adventures, carve up on the slopes at Gaustablikk Skisenter. Try ice-climbing, snowshoeing and Telemark skiing. Zip line over a dramatic gorge and bungee jump from a suspension bridge in Vemork.
Attractions in Rjukan are ideal for adventurists, nature lovers and history buffs. Buses reach the town from Oslo and most towns and cities in Telemark county.
