Shipping Container Cabin

NUMBER 6 and NEWEST! The Ellwood Box Hop is a single story, minimal Mid-Century box hop which was designed to span a ravine that is directly over a waterfall! The Ellwood is named after an influential designer based out of LA in the 70’s who was known for his minimal steel and glass (couldn’t be more box hop) designs, Craig Ellwood.

The Hocking Hills is an area of the Allegheny Plateau in Appalachian Ohio, primarily in Hocking County, that features cliffs, gorges, rock shelters, and waterfalls. The relatively extreme topography in this area is due to the Blackhand Sandstone (so named because of Native American graphics on the formation near Newark, Ohio), a particular formation that is thick, hard and weather-resistant, and so forms high cliffs and narrow, deep gorges.

The home can be accessed with a key in a lockbox next to the door.

Although everything is on one story, this home is a jaw dropper. Spanning the seasonal waterfall, you are suspended in the air overlooking the waterfalls edge, into the deep ravine below. Did we mention that there is a glass floor inside? From inside you can look out 3 large panoramic windows to the expansive ravine and waterfalls edge, OR you can look beneath your feet to catch a glimpse of the water before it tumbles over the edge.

The third Box Hop on the 75 acres, the Ellwood, is situated towards the top of the property and spans a ravine, suspended over a waterfall. The house is absolutely breathtaking in all seasons as you can watch the water tumble over the falls in spring/summer or see them completely frozen into majestic pieces of art in the winter.

There is no shortage of views at this hop and you can easily hike your way towards the marked trails near the other canyon on the property to see the larger cave and waterfall. This house is very secluded and peaceful. A fan favorite by far.

The driveway is a long gravel driveway. With any inclement weather, we recommend an all-wheel or 4-wheel drive vehicle. The driveway is maintained by a local company, but we want to be sure that you are aware.

The Ellwood was a perfect rental property for our daughter's wedding weekend at The Seventy-Five Venue. The views from the box hop were amazing. Clean and beautifully decorated. Spacious enough for four. people.

Amazing stay!

Great Getaway Location

My sister and I went here to get away for a few days and it was the perfect place! The property was clean and looks exactly as it is presented in the pictures. There is plenty to do in the area from hiking in the Hocking Hill State Park to just checking out the local area. While it was a little cold and rainy, we were still able to enjoy our time in the area. Highly recommend renting from here.

So cozy!

We could not have asked for a more wonderful place to enjoy a low-key Thanksgiving! The location is great - close to shops/coffee and all the main hiking trails. The hardest part was actually getting ourselves to leave the place as they have created a very cozy vibe. We will definitely stay at another box hop property again!

This place was absolutely amazing!! We loved the hot tub and the beautiful surroundings!! We would love to come back in the summer so we could hike!! The only thing I would suggest was that the furniture in the living room be more comfortable.

We had such a great time spending our anniversary here! The views were beautiful and so was The Ellwood. We had a little trouble finding it, but the Boxhop staff kindly guided us to where we needed to be. I would highly recommend staying here!

Easter April at the Ellwood

We loved our stay at the Ellwood. The house/container itself is super cool let alone the setting. It is private and surrounded by beautiful cliffs, a meadow and a trickling stream which was lovely to hear all night with windows open. It is very sound proof with windows closed. The Ellwood included everything we needed for our stay including the kitchen which was outfitted with all equipment needed to cook meals. I would not hesitate to stay here again.

We had the perfect stay at the Ellwood! Our family of four visited to kick off summer break and couldn’t have enjoyed it more. The property is amazing and gives you the feel of nearby trails without the crowds. I loved being able to hear the babbling water Running below and can’t say enough how much I loved the property. Highly Recommended Stay!

Ended up booking the Ellwood Box Hop for a night with my partner. The place was absolutely perfect for the two of us (though I could easily see us having 2 more friends come along next time!) It was extremely cozy with the most spectacular views of the woods. The amenities offered everything we needed to just relax & unwind. Also the decor was SO well done - it really added to the experience. Definitely would stay here again & look into booking some of the other properties!

Best weekend ever!!

We absolutely loved this place. The water was flowing through the rocks down the hill. You could hear the water flowing it was so peaceful and we had the most relaxing weekend we’ve ever had. Did some sightseeing and this area is full of nature and very cool shops. Oasis coffee at the bottom of the hill has very good coffee and small breakfast bites. We will be staying again.

The Elwood- Spring Break 2025

Loved the house! The pictures didn’t do the place justice.!the gravel road leading to the house is a little anxiety causing but once there - it was wonderful. The decor was on point. The hot tub towels were not where the house guide said - took a little searching to find. Would recommend a fan or ceiling fans. Very clean. Five stars- would recommend!

Our family loved Box Hop Elwood perched over a running stream overlooking a small picturesque Hocking Valley scene. A glass bottom floor and large windows connects you with nature even while inside. Small space living unnoticeable with the open and bright design. Modern furnishings and great use of interior space. Dishwasher and laundry too! Hot tub is perfect after long day of hiking - push yourself on the trails, it's worth it!The Box Hop crew are highly responsive, professional, and helpful!Thanks for a nice spring break

The Ellwood was beautiful! The perfect get away surrounded by trees on top of a ravine. Great size for my family. We listened to the records inside and enjoyed the hot tub & the Solo stove outside. Loved all the windows. Laying in bed you feel like you are sleeping outside (but without a tent blocking your view of the outdoors), staring at all the trees in front of you. so cool! Highly recommend!

Perfect Mother-Duaghter weekend hopper!

Beautiful and so unique! A true nature oasis with its wonderful natural light through perfectly placed windows! The space is breathtaking, the amenities plenty and the location just quiet enough yet close to any modern conveniences you may choose to utilize outside of the hopper. My daughter loved using the hot tub each evening and waking up to view the waterfall from above (fairly dry for us during our trip yet still magical to watch the wildlife and bugs below us). This is our second box hop (we have enjoyed the Boho and Ellwood now) and I would say that this one is my preferred location for travel to and from during the day. Thank you for another memorable trip for my daughter and I!

Great Experience!

We loved everything about the Ellwood! It was beautiful and unique! We stayed during a very rainy time which made it really neat to stay over the waterfall. The one area of improvement I have is to elevate the comfort level to the same level of the beauty they have curated. The Ellwood is missing some basics like tissues, extra blankets to snuggle up with at the TV, and good rugs at the door (we stayed during a very rainy time so we dragged in a lot of mud). These are small details but would really put everything even more above and beyond!
