Our family spent a delightful week in this beautiful house right near Beynac in July. The house is as good, or better, than the photos -- large, comfortable, beautifully located above the Dordogne river. The bedrooms are large, most face the river, the beds are comfortable. There is an enormous outdoor area, perfectly made for kids as well as adults, with playground equipment, a boules court, ping pong, badminton, a sparkling lightly salted pool, and a garden to sit in or explore. Farm animals next door, a donkey, goats, chickens, etc. provided lots of interest to "city kids".
We were 7 adults and 2 children yet there was lots of room for everyone to get involved preparing meals in the kitchen, an indoor as well as outdoor dining table, a TV where we could watch World Cup games, WIFI that worked well except for one day because of a recent storm.
The property is so large that there are always areas of shade, even in the hottest weather. Evelyne Trémoulet is a very attentive, friendly, accommodating hostess, eager to answer questions and make our stay as perfect as it could be.
Saint-Vincent-de-Cosse is a short ride from Beynac and walkable, although the only forest path that we could find took us back onto the road well before the town. Since there was no shoulder, it was not safe to walk it at night and, during high season, probably not during the day, which was a pity since we would have loved to leave the car behind. This same road (2-lane) goes right under the house, so you can hear some traffic, mostly during the day so sleep is not interrupted at night.
There are nice, accommodating touches for kids -- high chair and folding gates at the tops and bottoms of stairs.
All in all, a beautifully thought out house for guests and in probably the most beautiful area of France. Charming towns with outdoor markets, medieval châteaux, pre-historic cave paintings, canoeing on the river, hot-air balloons flying overhead, fabulous Périgourdien food, and friendly people. What more could one ask for a family vacation?
