This ancient church is dedicated to Praiano’s patron saint and contains some of his remains and priceless works of art.
View the relics of Praiano’s patron saint, appreciate ancient religious artworks and admire the majolica tiled cupola of San Luca Church. The original building dates back to the early part of the 12th century, although much of what remains today is from a refurbishment in 1588.
Next to the church is a three-storey bell tower. Visitors are not permitted inside the tower, but it’s an elegant sight and worthy of a photograph. The simple facades of the tower and church blend in with the old buildings of Praiano.
Inside the main church there are three naves, with six altars on each side. Look down at your feet at the majolica-tiled floor that was laid in 1789. It depicts Saint Luke in the act of painting surrounded by flowers and birds. Luke was one of the authors of the four gospels of the New Testament bible.
Take the time to savor the work of 16th and 17th century artists such as Giovanni Bernardo Lama and Padovano Di Montorio. Many of the paintings are still in excellent condition. Two of the most important pictures are Lama’s representation of the circumcision and Di Montorio’s depiction of Our Lady of the Rosary.
The church is the final resting place of some of Saint Luke’s remains. Stop by the vessel containing his relics and admire the silver statue in his image. It dates from 1696 and is paraded around the town twice a year during grand processions that celebrate the saint. There is also a full-length wood carving of the revered religious figure. Spend some time enjoying the many other works of art, which include marble sculptures and marble altars.
San Luca Church is situated in the center of Praiano. It is open daily from mid-afternoon until the early evening. Admission is free.
