Follow a scenic woodland trail to discover the fascinating sandstone rock formations and pretty waterfall of this serene pebble beach.

Sandcut Beach is a strikingly beautiful pebble beach. Totally undeveloped, this is a place to find peace. As it’s quite secluded, you won’t usually find too many other people here. Come at the right time and you might even be lucky enough to get a completely private viewing of the ocean vistas and the soothing waterfall.

Leave your car at the nearby parking lot and set out on the 10-minute walk down the thickly wooded trail that leads to the beach. See how many different species of giant tree you can spot towering high on either side along the way. Although it’s short and suitable for all fitness levels, the path is steep and slippery in some places, so be sure to wear suitable shoes.

Once you come out onto the beach, enjoy the rugged isolation of the long stretch of pebbles spread out before you. Walk the length of the beach, keeping watch for unusual rocks, shells and other ocean treasures. On a clear day, look out across the water and take in the stunning views of Washington’s Olympic Peninsula.

The rosy color of the sandstone rocks around the edges of this beach brighten up the atmosphere, even in winter. Another lovely natural feature of the beach is the waterfall at the south end. Come in spring, fall or winter to see it at its best, when its waters will be flowing at their most powerful.

As Sandcut Beach area has no restaurants, cafés or shops, remember to bring snacks with you. Find a smooth sandstone rock to sit on while you eat, looking out across the ocean. Several whale species inhabit the local waters. Pay close attention and you might see some smooth gray backs or tails breaking the surface of the waves.

Getting to Sandcut Beach from Sooke by car is easy. The parking lot where you’ll start your 10-minute hike through the forest is just 19 miles (31 kilometers) to the west of the town. It’s a short distance to travel to experience the isolation and natural beauty of this remarkable place.
