Spend a day exploring the stunningly designed home of the Saskatchewan Parliament.

A visit to the Saskatchewan Legislative Building is a great way to learn about the inner workings of the Canadian government. Bring lunch and make a day of exploring this majestic building on the shores of Wascana Lake.

Built in 1912, this building symbolizes the optimism and hope of the Saskatchewan community. The majestic exterior and distinctive dome made from pale Manitoba Tyndall stone are inspirational. Enjoy the view while approaching from Wascana Lake before you walk through the building’s stunningly colorful and well-manicured gardens.

The beaux arts style of the building is even more impressive on the inside. Graced with a sweeping, symmetrical grand staircase and an interior featuring 34 kinds of marble, the building exudes a stately atmosphere perfectly suited for the political process.

Take an informative tour through the grounds and legislative chambers in English or French. This tour will take you past the impressive green marble rotunda and the library, providing in-depth knowledge about both the history of the building and the processes of the government. Feel history come alive through treasured items like the library’s table which was used by the Canadian Fathers of Confederation for meetings as far back as 1864.

Delve into the inner workings of parliament with a visit to the assembly rooms. Though they are not open to the public when in session, the atmosphere of mahogany and green carpet makes it easy to imagine the city’s leaders making vital decisions here. The proceedings of the assembly are televised. Check the local stations to see what is going on before you venture out.

After investigating the political side of the building, enjoy lunch in the designated picnic area or take a calming walk through neighboring Wascana Centre.

The Saskatchewan Legislative Building is handicapped-accessible and easily reached by public transportation. Admission is free and the building is open to visitors daily, year-round, with tours every half-hour. Guides, brochures and tour information are available from the visitor services desk.
