The Space:
Located next to Savannah’s picturesque Washington Square, (named for George Washington) The Washington Square Collection is one of Savannah's oldest homes built between 1790 and 1810. The award-wining, historically preserved home is a luxury refuge for families and friends looking to relax, unwind and explore Savannah.
This home sat vacant and decaying for YEARS until we bought it in 1992. Miraculously, we were able to retain the vast majority of its original details! The stair case, heart pine floors, windows, fireplaces and mantles are all part of the original home.
No expense was spared on this painstakingly restored, but modernized historic mansion. It is fully outfitted with a gourmet kitchen and island seating for 3. Doors from the kitchen lead to the lush, private courtyard.
The front porch and entrance of the home has 3 steps approaching the porch. So it is not wheel chair accessible but it may be suitable for some folks with mobility issues, as there is a full bedroom and bathroom on the first floor.
The full size, gourmet kitchen features top of the line electric appliances and island seating for three. The connecting dining room and sun room feature the original fireplaces and wood millwork. Guests can lounge in the sun room and appreciate the courtyard views. The formal living room has comfortable seating and a large smart TV for family gatherings with historically preserved details like the original fireplace - no, we don't allow fires any longer!
The private courtyard features historic terracotta statuettes and lush foliage. Table seating for 8 allows for alfresco meals or evening cocktails.
On the first floor of the Main House we have the first of four bedrooms with a queen bed tucked into the front window nook. There is a full bathroom beside this bedroom with a large walk-in shower and this bathroom has a entrance from the hallway for all guests to access.
On the second floor you will find the other 3 bedrooms and spacious bathrooms. The primary suite faces Congress Street and with a queen size bed, chaise lounge and a LARGE luxury bathroom! This bathroom has a decorative fireplace, 2 separate vanities, a lovely soaking tub and a walk-in shower. On the other side of this bathroom is a large walk-in closet for the primary guests.
The second bedroom has a King size bed, en-suite bathroom and closet. The airy and sunny bathroom has a soaking tub and separate walk-in shower.
The last, 4th bedroom has two TWIN antique maple poster beds and a full e-suite bathroom. These rooms are bright and sunny and this bathroom has a large walk-in shower.
The Carriage House has additional sleeping for 4 people and is a free standing apartment built over our garage, with a private entrance on the lane/alley. It is located behind the main house. The carriage house has an open living room and fully equipped kitchen with island seating for four.
Each of the 2 bedrooms have en suite bathrooms & queen size beds. Both bathrooms have tub/shower combos. Guests will walk through the garage and courtyard to connect with guests in the Main House.
During the horse-and-buggy days, Savannah’s carriage houses were the sleeping quarters of the family's carriage drivers. The drivers were responsible for the care of the horses & the carriages housed in what we now use as auto-garages.
The Neighborhood:
The house is located near Washington Square, a primarily residential part of Savannah's Historic District. This quiet neighborhood offers residents and visiting guests a relaxing spot while within walking distance of the vibrant downtown attractions. It is a short 2-block walk to Historic River Street and the Savannah River.
The property has a private 2-car garage for guests. Other vehicles must use metered, on-street parking.
Getting Around:
This location is one block from River Street and Broughton Street. A very walkable location to most of the must-see spots in the Historic District!
