Mingle with locals in this sprawling square, a popular venue for colorful, delicious and fun community festivals, shows and concerts.

Schuetzenplatz, or Schützenplatz, is a huge square in “Mitte,” the central district of Hannover that attracts millions of visitors each year. Come here to see locals going about their daily lives or join them at some of the events held in this public space during the warmer months and around Easter and Christmas.

“Schützen” means “shooting” in German. Schuetzenplatz was initially designed as an open space for military exercises and demonstrations, as part of the nearby barracks, the Schützenhaus. This building no longer exists. The square has a round central building with a canopy for market stalls and a stage on top.

In May at the Schuetzenplatz you can enjoy the delectable offerings of “Europe’s Biggest Street Food Festival.” Sample craft beers, gourmet treats and ice creams from all over the continent and enjoy the music.

Summer is the time for the Schützenfest Hannover, one of the biggest folk festivals in the world. This time of year also brings the annual fair, a colorful spectacle with rides, sugary treats and challenges that the children will love.

Come back to Schuetzenplatz, during Germany’s famous Oktoberfest to celebrate it in traditional style. Enjoy huge glasses of frothing German beer and take in the mouthwatering smells of bratwurst, fried onions and spicy mustard as you share a table with the locals. While it’s unusual for a northern German city to celebrate this festival, the locals in Hannover have embraced it with enthusiasm.

The Schuetzenplatz is just north of the HDI-Arena in Mitte, just south of the Altstadt (Old Town). If you are driving, you can find free parking spots on the surrounding streets on Sundays. During the week, for free parking it’s best to use the “Park-and-Ride” (P+R) lots on the outskirts of the city. If you want to park closer to the Schuetzenplatz, there is metered parking at the stadium and several commercial parking garages nearby as well, which charge a fee.

Charges may apply for certain events held in the square. Check Hannover’s events calendar before you visit to see what is on. The square is easy to navigate with a stroller and in a wheelchair.
