With a bright white façade and a gleaming Carrara marble interior decorated with gold-framed paintings, this cathedral impresses inside and out.

The stunning Se Cathedral is the religious hub of the city and an important colonial landmark. Admire the attractive design features of this well-preserved structure and soak up the serene atmosphere inside the nave.

Construction began on the cathedral in 1748 and was finally finished in 1772. Though the cathedral was subject to wear and tear over the centuries, it has undergone renovation and is now in excellent condition.

Start your explorations in the adjacent Praça Dom Frei Caetano Brandão, an attractive well-landscaped square with plenty of greenery. Stand back from cathedral and admire the gleaming white façade. The symmetrical structure features two twin towers on either side, stone figures, a cross, a clock and a rose window.

Venture inside the church to inspect the interior, which blends Baroque, colonial and neoclassical influences. The floors are composed of shiny marble while the walls and ceilings bear striking patterns. Of particular note are the roof frescos and the gold-framed paintings that can be found in the apses lining the nave. Continue up the aisle for a closer look at the high altar, which was gifted to the church by Pope Pius IX.

Be aware that the cathedral is an active place of worship and be respectful to any worshippers you may encounter. The cathedral is usually hushed and serene, and thus perfect for a moment of quiet contemplation or prayer.

One of the best times to visit the cathedral is during the opening procession of Belém’s annual Círio de Nazaré celebration in October. Millions of pilgrims make the journey here to walk, along with a statue of the Virgin Mary, from the cathedral to the Basilica of Our Lady of Nazareth of Exile.

Se Cathedral is located in the heart of Belém’s old town near the waterfront, within easy walking distance of several nearby attractions. Consider visiting the nearby Casa das Onze Janelas, the ParaReligious Art Museum and the Forte do Presépio while you’re in the area.
