Jutland’s northernmost town is famous for its picturesque houses, astounding scenery and quality of light, which attracts landscape painters from all over the world.

Base yourself in Skagen to explore, or capture, the remote tip of Denmark. The small coastal town with its yellow-painted houses and red roofs is a charming destination. The stunning natural surroundings have been well documented by local artists and the collective of Skagen Painters is world-famous.

This historic fishing village of fewer than 9,000 residents is quiet in winter. In summer, the long sunshine hours, white sandy beaches and outdoor attractions attract travellers from all over the world. Hotel, café and restaurant owners open their doors and the town centre becomes a lively hub. Each year in June, Midsummer Eve is celebrated on Sønderstrand beach, near town, with a spectacular bonfire.

For fresh shellfish and fish head to the harbour precinct. Step back in time in the Skagen Town and Regional Museum with a historic windmill, dwellings, workshop and fishermen’s boat.

Aspiring artists will appreciate Skagen’s spectacular northern lights. Join the art scene and visit the Skagens Museum to get inspiration from the famous Skagen Painters. The Grenen Art Museum was founded by the world-famous marine painter Axel Lind.

Jump aboard a tractor-drawn train or hike to Grenen to see the North and Baltic Seas collide. Being the top of the peninsula, migratory birds flock here by the thousands twice a year. Climb the nearby Skagen Fyrbakken lighthouse for majestic views.

Head south to Raabjerg Mile, a large sand dune that has drifted up to 50 feet (15 metres) a year for hundreds of years. Look out for the white tower of Den Tilsandede Kirke, a historic church mostly covered in the dunes.

Skagen is easily reached by flying to Copenhagen or Aalborg and taking the train or renting a car from there. Accommodation is abundant during summer.

Explore “The Land of Light” and the picturesque coastal town of Skagen and come an see for yourself why so many painters and poets were inspired by its natural beauty.
