About this property
The Sandcastle: An Artistic Haven! Private Beach, Family-Friendly Wonderland
Summary: Come lose yourself in the sunsets over Lake Michigan from your own porch. A perfect location for a family reunion. Enjoy bonfires, sunsets over Lake Michigan, a good book in a hammock or home-made pizzas in the outdoor pizza oven. The house is filled with original artwork from the owners collection from her over 30 children's books. The grounds are large and great for those who want to spend their time outside or on the deck taking in the views. The property is full of fun activities for children to entertain themselves all day. We have a volleyball net, croquet set, baseball, bicycles, bocci ball, giant chess and checker sets, giant hammock, school yard size swings, two teeter totters, a playhouse for children and 2 fire pits. We just installed a stairway to our 100 feet of private beach. We are 1 mile from a free nature reserve with 600 feet of beach and the public "South Beach" just 3 miles away. Both beaches are a quick bike ride away. Van Buren Public Beach and dunes are 7 miles away. .We are also very close to 2 great public beaches. We can promise beautiful sunsets from our front lawn with a fire pit and stars. The owner, Wendy Anderson Halperin is a recognized children's book artist and author. She also has 14 years experience in teaching drawing. Wendy is offering to our guests as part of the weekly rental package 2 Drawing courses at no additional fee: Adult: Drawing Nature ( your choice of plants or animals) Children : Learn to Draw because You Can. Each course is 2 hours and can be divided up as our guests choose during their vacation. A great way to spend a rainy day. We have another building on the property where this non profit works out of and all courses are in there. We can accommodate as many as 15 people for a course. Visit our non profit drawingchildrenintoreading.com to see more of Wendy's work with children.

It is a paved bike path..
Come up from the beach and rinse off in the outdoor shower.

Absolutely exceptional. Wendy and John have a magical property that provides a peaceful getaway with everything you may need for a perfect vacation. Everything from the property, beach access, wood fire pizza oven and puppet theater just blew us away. We will be back for another visit!!
The outdoor spaces are amazing. We enjoyed eating outside and our children had lots of places to play. The beach access was so convenient and very private. The inside of the house needs a little updating and we would have appreciated locks on the bathroom doors. The hosts were very helpful and we really enjoyed our family art lesson.
We had a lovely stay at The Sand Castle. Beautiful and creative house with amazing views of Lake Michigan. The sunsets were incredible! The hosts were so nice and very attentive to all the details
My family (six adults and two dogs) had an absolutely wonderful time here at Sandcastle. The home is exquisite, comfortable, and exceeded our expectations. South Haven is just minutes away. We look forward to returning to Sandcastle.
The property is huge and has tons of space for fun and activities. We booked this as our family vacation and let all 3 kids bring friends! There was plenty of room and tons to do. The kids loved the paddle boards and kayaks. We all loved the pizza oven and outdoor movie theater. The hosts gave instructions for both and they were easy to use! It was a great vacation space with private lake access. House is equipped with everything you need and has fabulous views of the lake!
What a special property! When you have views and lake access like this it’s hard to want anything more, but the amenities (so many bikes!), the grounds, the pizza oven and the amazing owners take this to the next level - thank you Wendy and John!
Clean, well-stocked kitchen and plenty of room for our 8 adults and 2 dogs. Also close to a bike path that connects to South Haven on one side and the dunes in another direction.
What an amazing property! My sister, brother and parents all stayed with our families! The house and property are magical. Lots of fun things to do outside. The kitchen was well stocked and we loved trying the pizza oven. Wendy and John were amazing hosts and even gave an art lesson which was a huge hit.
We stayed in October for a long weekend and hope to come back during the summer to enjoy the beach more!
Highly recommend!
If we could give 6 stars, we would! the property is like having a resort all to yourself. The house was awesome, and had so much character thanks to the personal artistic touches in every room. Big and spacious, yet very cozy and warm. The beach is fantastic, and we really lucked out wit 4 straight days of sun and warmth late in September. Even the lake was plenty warm for swimming and Frisbee tossing.
But, perhaps the best part was the hosts. The Halperins are truly the kind of people you feel enriched after meeting. Not only are they two of the nicest people you'll ever meet, they are also very interesting to chat with. Without question, we will return!
From the moment we arrived, we knew we were in for something special.
The Sandcastle offers incredible views of Lake Michigan. Whether sipping morning coffee on the deck or watching the sunset, the scenery never failed to captivate us.
All of our children were overjoyed with the amenities! From the children's books, dollhouse, swings, playgrounds there was never a dull moment. The hosts truly thought of everything.
The well-maintained grounds were a delight. We explored the gardens, had a picnic on the beach and made our own wood-fired pizza. It felt like our own private paradise.
Wendy and John were warm, welcoming, and attentive. They made sure our stay was comfortable and memorable. Their genuine care added an extra layer of magic to our vacation.
We can't wait to return.
Our family (ages 4 to 76) spent July 14-20 at this special property. Everything was even better than the photos. The home is filled with Wendy’s beautiful artwork. Our 10-year-old granddaughter said she wished she could live there forever. Wendy and John went above and beyond to make us feel welcome and accommodate our needs. They even purchased a cushioned deck chair so our oldest family member would be more comfortable. Wendy’s drawing lessons were a big hit, especially with our 7-year-old grandsons. Our grandkids enjoyed hammocks, playground and basketball court. The beach was beautiful and the sunsets were amazing. South Haven is a short drive away ( less than 10 minutes to a big grocery store). John helped us with the outdoor pizza oven and Wendy provided a recipe for pizza dough. Perfect meal for our last evening at the Sandcastle. Wonderful memories.
This place is amazing. My family of 7 adults and 5 kids ages 1 1/2 to 8 had non-stop fun. The pictures on the website don’t do this place justice. You drive in and the sculpture garden takes your breath away before you are 50 yards into the property. There are swings, hammocks, teeter totters, a jungle gym, a play house and a puppet show arena for the kids. For the adults, there is a pizza oven and outdoor dining area that we used twice. Also a large dining table on the porch that we used a lot and a big kitchen that was the focal point for a lot of the week we stayed. The beach had a new stairway built to access it and we had a lot of fun looking for rocks and swimming. (Bring water shoes as the water line is quite rocky). The host live on the 2.5 acre property but don’t get in your way at all. In fact, Wendy and John were a pleasure to get to know and I actually sought them out a couple of times to talk as they are both quite interesting. Wendy has an art school on property and gave our entire family an art lesson. They were quick to fix any minor issues immediately. We all discussed coming back again in the future.
Thank you, Wendy and John, for a terrific experience! We had 8 adults (4 couples) and a toddler. Each couple had a private room except for the toddler. There is plenty of seating/dining space for everyone, with a large kitchen table, a long picnic table on the deck overlooking lake michigan, and a long table under a pergola next to the fabulous wood-fired pizza oven (we cheated and bought dough from a local pizza shop). We used the deck-top fire pit overlooking the lake every night. The kitchen was well stocked for large-scale cooking. We brought some pans, knives, etc, which proved unnecessary. The hosts were attentive and responsive and live within sight of the property. The refrigerator was not cooling properly when we arrived, and the hosts quickly brought over a temporary replacement refrigerator. They immediately brought over a replacement grill when we pointed out a problem with the existing one. They also helped us to fire up the pizza oven and provided helpful instructions. The property is huge and park-like, with swings, climbing structure, 1/2 basketball court, and shed with bikes (and pump) and beach chairs. There is a nice sand beach, but the waterline to about 15 feet offshore is quite rocky (about 2" rocks) so bring your water shoes. Be sure to ask John to show you his marble sculptures and ask Wendy about her clay sculptures of NYC subway riders. Her beautiful children's book illustrations are framed throughout the house.
Couldn’t have dreamed of a better location for a family experience. Everything was spectacular, from the grounds with so much to do for the kids, the private beach, provided boats etc, plus the accommodating hosts. Plus the best view of Lake Michigan we have ever enjoyed!
This is an amazing home with a great beach! The beach has a sandbar just off of the shore so even the smallest of kiddos could play safely. My family loved the art and personal touches in the home. The outdoor space was absolutely magical as well.
Wendy and John were so amazing. Their place was pure magic! We used the wood fire pizza oven two nights!! The yard is so pretty with all the flowers! The view of the ocean was breathtaking. We had fun at the beach with our kids and dogs…. Very private. I would love to come back
The views were breathtaking, the home was perfect for our family and pets. We spent many hours outdoors around the campfires, cooking in the wonderful kitchen and enjoying the very impressive artwork of John’s and Wendy’s throughout the home. The pizza oven was such a treat too! Would love to return again!!
Easiest review I’ve ever done. We miss it already. We have been on many upscale beach trips and this one is tops. We were 4 adult couples but would be great for kids too!We LOVED our week with Wendy, John and Pinky (sweetest cavalier doggie)The view is beyond description. The beach amenities are awesome. The pizza oven and outdoor dining and living areas are wonderful. The kitchen is great! The bedrooms are spacious and comfortable. The drive to S Haven is very convenient and the town is great— icecream, shopping, dining— easy! Also easy drive to Saugatuck— a MUST!We did the cruise on the replica 1800s tall ship— fantastic! We did Wendy’s art lesson— so fun. This is a special place and very special people own it. We really hope and plan to be back!!
We loved our stay at Sandcastle! We had four generations staying at the house, ranging in ages from 3 to 94, and it was a fantastic place with lots of activities, both indoors and outdoors for the kids. The private beach was amazing, and a new staircase from the property to the beach made it easy to use. There are lots of places to sit and enjoy the view of the lake. Our 6 and 11 year old granddaughters wanted to live there! The owner, Wendy, gave two of the kids drawing lessons, and she couldn't have been nicer. It is a very secluded place with tons of activities for kids. If you want nature and isolation along with a great adventure for everyone, Sandcastle is the place to go!
Good points:
1 Best view of sunset on the lake bar none from outside or inside the home
2 well maintained and cool throughout the home
3 Owner is very nice and helpful
4 lots of bedrooms and bathrooms and great living
space and kitchen, dining room
5 property is great, especially for younger children. teetertoters, swing sets, play house. Great outside dining picnic table holds large groups
Only Complaint (owners can't help this): The beach has eroded and is practically inaccessible
