Southern Russia

Travel Guide

Rosa Khutor, located in Russia's Western Caucasus. This was my favorite viewpoint from that day trip into the mountains. I was based in Adler, a district of Sochi, which has great mountain views of it's own (despite not actually being in the mountains itself). What made Adler so great was it's mild winter climate and seaside location but also having those mountain views and being under 1 hour away from into the mountains itself. During winter time less than 1 hour is the difference between two totally different worlds. And more about the location of this photo: Rosa Khutor is located in Krasnaya Polyana, in the Adler region of the city of Sochi. Don't let that fool you, though: Sochi city is, geographically, really huge. There's many different parts of it, including the rural mountains. Additionally, this area is part of Krasnodar Krai, one of Russia's federal subjects. And Rosa Khutor, as an alpine ski resort, is quite new. Constructed from 2003 to 2011, it hosted the alpine skiing events for the 2014 Winter Olympics and Paralympics. I'll definitely be returning here someday and seeing how it looks in different seasons!

Do NOT skip going to Dombay in the Caucasus Mountains. The views and wildflowers will take your breath away
