Montana Luz Hacienda Views, Air Condition, Enclosed yard, Hot tub and Sauna
Arroyo Seco - Des Montes Area - with big sky mountain views! Half way between Taos and Ski Valley - 7 miles to town and 9 miles to Ski Valley
Montana Luz Hacienda “Mountain Light"
A signature Southwest residence, located in a ranching community seven miles from the Town of Taos and approximately nine miles from Taos Ski Valley. The hacienda is within walking distance to Arroyo Seco on a rural road which passes an old Penitente Morada, cemetery and the back of Julia Roberts’ 50-acre ranch. This cozy historic country home was built in the early ‘60s by sisters Sandra and Laurel Seth, Southwest adobe builders who developed a unique building architecture style and design. They are authors of the book called “ADOBE!” - also known locally for their use of natural resources, hand-made adobes, brick, flagstone and timbered local wood. The original 950 square foot structure was built on part of the Antonio Martinez Land Grant. Over the years, different owners have added their touches and more rooms to create what is currently a 3,000 square foot living space. Recently remodeled, the structure features a 400 square foot inner flag stone court yard, portals (covered patio's) for extended outdoor living with access from the kitchen, living room and northeast bedroom and an additional 2,000 square foot flagstone patio and connecting walkways surrounding the entire home. Additionally there is an open ramada with hot tub, sauna, fire pit, several private patios and ample parking. The home is on approximately one acre of land, surrounded by an adobe and latilla (coyote fence) with an electric gate for secured privacy. Large viga ceilings are prominent throughout the hacienda, as are Spanish corbels and lintels. To the immediate left of the front door is an open kitchen with talavera tile counters and custom shelving. An eating area is nestled in a corner with bench seating for eight people. The kitchen is fully equipped with new appliances: refrigerator / freezer with ice maker, electric stove featuring a ceramic surface and overhead microwave, dishwasher, disposal, double sink. Additional appliances include a coffee maker, blender, 4-slot toaster, crock-pot, griddle, hand mixer and flat ware for 16 people. You will find all the necessary kitchen tools to complete any gourmet meal - right down to the wine and brandy glasses. In the dining room opposite the kitchen, a traditional kiva fireplace captures one’s eye. The center of this room also serves as additional table seating for four people. Of particular fascination is the raised window alcove banco (built in bed or bench) with latilla ceiling. The banco offers extended sleeping for 2 guests on a full size mattress. An extensive entertainment center features a 42” satellite television with a DVD, Sony AM/FM/CD/Blue Tooth stereo system. A second satellite television is located in Bedroom 3. The four bedrooms are separated, two on each side of the living-dining- kitchen area, providing privacy and ease of movement throughout the house At night, guests enjoy starry skies, glistening snow off the Sangre de Christo Mountain Range and the glowing valley lights of Arroyo Seco while relaxing in the 8 person 14 jet hot tub. The outdoor sauna is an additional amenity found in only a few Taos vacation rentals. Montana Luz is ideal for families and groups desiring to be together under one very southwest roof for a true Taos experience!

Went up for a boys ski trip. The conditions on the mountain were fair at best, but being able to come back to cook and hangout at the house was awesome. This would be a great couples retreat as well. The Hot tub is huge, the sauna was toasty, and the firepit was great on a chilly night. Easy to venture into both Taos and Arroyo Seco for supplies or a nice dinner as well. One of our crew was able to walk into Arroyo Seco after the airline lost his skis for a day. I think he said it took about 20 min and there are a couple great little spots in town to check out. Overall just a great spot for a group trip. Could probably comfortably fit 7 guys if somebody wanted to couch it (the couch was very comfy too). More than that would be a bit tight, especially with only 2 showers. The extra half bath with the mini tub does come in handy though!
We overall enjoyed the property. It was conveniently located between Ski Valley and Taos. The views of the mountains from the outdoor space was phenomenal whether morning coffee pre-sunrise or early evenings for dinner. Inside the place was efficient but we wish there had been a particular room where we could have more easily congregated. The kitchen was well equipped for our stay as we cooked most of our meals and had everything furnished that we needed! My favorite thing was the daybed…for napping or reading books or just lounging. We spent a great deal of time outside from coffee to dining to hot tubbing and it was a great layout. Our only two complaints were we really needed another shower as the one bathroom off the kitchen only had a tub so we shared our master shower each day with 3 other family members. We sure didn’t mind sharing but it caused delays each day waiting on everyone to shower. The only other complaint was there is a brick ledge right in front of the sink just as you approach the counter / sink so several of us wearing sandals or barefoot had a screaming moment or two with our toes…a simple padded mat in front of the sink would eliminate the problem. We really give the place a 4.5 not a 4, but were unable to give 1/2 point increments in the survey. As far as a VRBO review litmus test let’s just say we would definitely go back and I think that means more than any of the ranking categories.

Reviewer Comments:
This house is conveniently located to the ski valley, approx 17 min away. We loved the large hot tub. We're a group of three adults and four kids, and we could all fit in at once in the hot tub. Being a 3-single parent crew with four kids, we needed every inch of sleeping space. The little alcove works as a tween's bed. The king beds were properly outfitted with bed linens, but the smaller beds lacked duvet covers. If you love your comfy down pillow, we recommend bringing it; the pillows provided are flat and firm without any fluff. The fireplaces in the bedrooms and dining room were inoperable, and the living room fireplace didn't work upon our arrival, but maintenance was able to fix it for us on the fifth day due to the holiday. The fireplace is controlled by a thermostat, which is nice because you can leave it on and not worry about the room getting too hot.Ample bath towels were provided, and towels for the hot tub were also provided, located by the patio door. The kitchen is well-stocked, but if you're looking for a chef's kitchen, it's worth noting the range is electric and counter-space limited. Overall, we recommend the property and would stay here again. There were no big surprises, and the listing accurately describes the property. The rate may be a little high considering the home's condition (it's old without updates), but due to the limited options for the size of our party, we'd stay here again.

Liked: Check-in, location, listing accuracy
No water first 24 hours, was resolved though. Great sauna! Nice lot and privacy
We had a wonderful stay at Montana Luz for a ski weekend with friends. The property is beautiful and had everything we needed to relax after several long days of skiing.
Beautiful old world charm of Taos. Yard perfect, parts actually had grass, so awesome for our cocker spaniel. The only place that had a/c was living room. We were pretty hot at night sleeping, we did a road trip from Texas so had many fans. The main room I was unhappy with was the bedroom with the TV. The loveseat was truly filthy. I had to move to plug in fans and tons of dead bugs behind the coach. Then in the bathroom on the sink was ants. I know that can happen but this place just needs a big cleaning, moving furniture etc.

We LOVED this VRBO. One of the best we've stayed at. Taos is an amazing place and was an easy drive from Denver. We try to go somewhere different each year for a ski trip and this was one of our favorites. The house was fantastic!
The home was great for our 3 generation family. Some of the wooden outdoor furniture needs to be replaced as it is broken and way splintered. Also many spiders and other bugs inside. Time to spray? Great neighborhood. Wonderful views.
We all enjoyed our stay to memorialize our family life so much!
So many areas to be together or alone. We enjoyed the outdoor areas, especially the fire pit and hot tub, as much as the interior. We were each able to find just the right bedroom for our personalities. The kitchen was well stocked with pots and pans and utensils. We particularly loved the place settings. We look forward to staying again. Thank you for a wonderful experience! Cindy
Our ski group had a blast! We loved the hot tub and house! No complaints. Only a few minor bits of info for future renters… the one bed advertised as a queen is a full, so it is tight for two adults. Also note that the toilette and shower in the master bedroom does not have any privacy wall, so my wife and I had some good jokes about that. Such cool, unique architecture in this house! We loved it and absolutely would be back in a heartbeat.

Great stay although no shower in one bathroom, only a half tub no adult could fold up into. No A/C. Furniture and kitchen dated but usable. Comfy beds! Excellent hot tub and sauna. Great views, large backyard. 1 mile easy walk to charming Arroyo Seco stores and Taos Cow.
Nothing compares to the beauty of the New Mexico mountains and wide open spaces! Seven of us used Montana Luz as our stay for a week as we explored the cuisine, culture and landscape of the area. The house embodies the best of architecture from the region. Unfortunately, after a 12 hour commute to our residence it was frustrating that the information shared by the rental agent didn't match the actual code for the gate which gave us access to the property. However, the rental agent was quick to respond and once parked and inside Terra was attentive to our needs --- to include a late night stop by the property to help us get the fire place lit as we settled in.
The caretaker gave us the incorrect gate code to get into the parking area. When contacted provided alternate access route and we then found correct code in notebook with property info in house. Water pressure was extremely low and it appeared the hot water had been turned off altogether. When contacted, problem was resolved the same day but apparent that no one had checked the property before our arrival. Food had been left in the refrigerator. Check out instructions said we could leave food for housekeeping or donation to a food pantry but believe that housekeeping should have cleaned out the leftovers from the previous guest.Had brought a DVD specifically to watch on our trip. There were written instructions for the DVD player but unable to find the referenced remote for the DVD. Caretaker not knowledgeable about the system. The house is beautiful with lovely grounds in a quiet location. It is very spacious and perfect for our group of 4 sisters in our 60s. We would recommend.

Reviewer Comments:
The house is a good location and roomy but many things did not function. It is clearly a very old home and we were fine with the uneven floors and rustic interior but there were issues with: 1) electricity. on our first night there was no electricity to 2 bedrooms and one bath. We sorted this out the next morning when it was light out and we found a 3rd breaker box (the caretaker was not aware of it); the electricity continued to go out in various parts of house and we had to reset breakers. 2) lighting. there is very little lighting in this house. perhaps the electric system cannot handle it. 3) heat the radiant floor heaters did not work during almost our entire stay (they came on during the night of our last night there). the caretaker was aware but unable to do anything. We suspect the full shut down of the electricity on the day before we left due to wind may have reset them but we are not sure. 2 of the bedrooms were extremely cold and we had to move the one portable space heater from the master bedroom back there leaving that room pretty cold. 4) fireplaces. there are FIVE kiva fireplaces in the house but only 1 worked (the one in the kitchen which had gas logs). The gas log fireplace in living room does not work and the other fireplaces all had artificial candles in them. 5) bathrooms - while there are three bathrooms the one in the master bedroom had no door and was completely open the bedroom/laundry room and the shower is extremely small. the 2nd bathroom has no shower and only a very small tub. both these bathrooms could really be improved by simply hanging a curtain around the tub and putting in a shower head. the third bathroom had a workable shower but no heat at all. Positives: the kitchen had most of the basic things one would need and plenty of dishes. the yard is completely fenced in, the hot tub was very nice and in good condition and the outdoor fire pit was nice and there was plenty of wood.

Overall, our group of 8 adults and 1 child really enjoyed our stay. The home has incredible character, and we loved the experience of staying in a traditional adobe-style property. There were enough bedrooms for everyone, and the hot tub and provided firewood were definite highlights after long ski days. That said, there were a few things we wish we had known in advance. We didn’t realize there are only two full bathrooms, and one of the tubs is quite small—better suited for a child than an adult. With eight adults sharing two showers, mornings required some coordination. The kitchen and dining area also felt a bit tight for a group of our size.We were also surprised to find ice on the walkway throughout our stay, which made entering and leaving the property slippery and potentially unsafe. It seemed like this could have been addressed fairly easily. Communication with the host was a bit inconsistent as well—we were told a cutting board would be dropped off (since there wasn’t one in the kitchen), but it never arrived. For the price, it’s a solid option with unique charm. However, if you’re looking for more space, additional amenities, or closer proximity to town, it may be worth spending a bit more.

Good property. Well suited to our needs. However, was not summer ready. Floor heater was ‘default ON’ at arrival. Plumber came next day to unplug completely. Single window unit evaporative cooler, hardly signifies as AIR CONDITIONING, was NOT working. Caretakers came after their dinner to fix it. Flannel sheets on some beds. Dryer did not work. Enjoyed the outside patios & firepit. Liked that was well fenced & secure in a somewhat remote location.

Overall we had a good experience. Our only disappointment in the house was the hot tub was not working upon arrival. Terra was very responsive to the situation and got someone to come fix it a couple days in. We understand hot tubs are finicky but it was a major draw for us in the house. Making sure it was working before our arrival would have been appreciated.

We had a wonderful time at Montana Luz Hacienda as a group of 7 in early February 2023. The house was well appointed, linens were good, and everything was in order. The patios, yard, and hottub are fantastic, and the completely fenced yard was wonderful since we had a dog with us. We had 4 cars too, so parking space was important. And there were nice conveniences too, like 2 openers for cars for the front gate. The caretaker was very responsive to questions and we felt well taken care of too. We were there to ski Taos Ski Valley each day, and enjoyed the location between the resort and Taos proper. (We'd stayed in other nearby houses with smaller groups, so wanted to be in the area.)A couple of very minor drawbacks - the hottub heat dropped inexplicably once evening. Resetting the breakers and electronics fixed it though. The coffee maker could be better/quicker. And there are only 2 small showers. But I would definitely stay here again with a group.

Good location and cool house. Second time we’ve stayed at this property. Close to Taos and Abe’s in Arroyo Seco! Hot tub struggled to keep temperature but we spent a lot of time in it and it was COLD!
