Tawang Monastery

One of our favourite shots from Tawang monastery in Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh state, northeast India. 📿Tawang monastery is the largest Buddhist monastery in India and the 2nd largest in the world, only surpassed by Potala palace in Lhasa, Tibet. 💫It's a colossal, self-contained medieval citadel and built across three different levels and harbouring hundreds of resident monks. In this image, you are observing the approach to the main courtyard of the monastery. Jili is leaning against the whitewashed wall of the principal prayer house, which enshrines a huge Buddha statue. How elegant and refined those windows are! To the left are monks’ residential buildings with their distinctive yellow roofs. ✨That graceful edifice in the distance, situated right at the entrance to the main courtyard, is where you will find butter lamps 🔥burning inside a small room on the upper level. There is also a balcony up here where one can indulge in a magnificent panoramic view overlooking Tawang. This was perfect for our family of 4, plenty of beds & bathrooms in the unit we rented. The pools were heated and clean. We would stay here again!

My room was very quiet and I enjoyed having the kitchen amenities and the balcony. The bed was average. My only negative comments are related to the unusually excessive daily damage deposit that I wasn’t expecting - big upfront unexpected expense! Also there was no bus cart for me to take groceries up to my room - but the bellmen would do it for a set fee. The pool was lovely, but closed at 7pm, which seemed early to me for summer. I enjoyed my stay, but won’t probably return to this resort.
