La Paloma Triste: Classic Adobe Near Big Bend NP
Summary: La Paloma Triste: Classic adobe vacation home. Minutes from Terlingua and Big Bend National Park.
The Space: Step back in time at this vintage Terlingua adobe. La Paloma Triste is an ideal escape from the madness of modern life. This is the quintessential Terlingua vacation home.
La Paloma Triste (The Sad Dove) is a classic adobe home near Willow Spring and just minutes from Terlingua with excellent views of the Chisos Mountains and Willow Mountain. Built in the 80’s, with antique doors, windows, fixtures, and furnishings reclaimed from much older homes in Mexico and the Southwest, this cozy home blends modern conveniences with genuine rustic charm. Whether relaxing by the wood burning stove or enjoying the views from the porch swing, you’ll feel as if you stepped back in time to the pioneer days of the Wild West.
There is plenty of room to relax with two bedrooms, a full kitchen, a large living room, one and a half bathrooms, a spacious porch and covered parking, not to mention forty private acres of pristine desert habitat. The main bedroom features a queen sized four poster bed, antique armoire, antique dresser and a private bath with a shower. The second bedroom has two walls full of windows with breathtaking views of the Chisos Mountains and nearby Bee Mountain. The living room has an antique wood burning stove (wood provided), rustic built-in shelves filled with artifacts and other items of local interests, and comfortable seating. The fully stocked kitchen has a new gas stove, antique sink, rustic shelving, and a classic pine and cedar table that was built by the owners. The large back porch has a porch swing for two with amazing views of the Chisos Mountains and Bee Mountain. The carport protects your vehicle from the west Texas sun and our infrequent storms.
Of course, the main attractions are outside. Take time to enjoy the solitude of the Chihuahuan desert and Willow Spring. The area around the house is landscaped with native plants, interesting rocks, and rusty pioneer artifacts that were collected over many years by the original owner. You will also want to visit Big Bend National Park, the Rio Grande River, Big Bend Ranch State Park, Terlingua Ghost Town, and our various restaurants and shops. If you don’t have time on this trip, you’re welcome to return again and again.
The views of the night sky are beyond simple description. The Big Bend region has the darkest nights (lowest light pollution) of anywhere in the continental US.
As the song says, “the stars at night are big and bright deep in the heart of Texas”. They’re even bigger and brighter here in the Bend. When the moon is out, you’ll be amazed at how bright and clear it shines. When the moon is not out, you’ll be stunned by the countless stars and the light and dark bands of the Milky Way. In the hour or two after sunset and before sunrise, you can often see the International Space Station and other satellites racing across the night sky. Shooting stars are visible throughout the year, especially during the Perseid and Geminid meteor showers.
Check out “VisitBigBend.com” for suggestions of things to do and see during your stay. Explore the parks, raft the river, go horseback riding, take scenic drives, go mountain biking, visit the ghost town, eat out, enjoy the local nightlife including live music at several small venues, watch the wildlife, or just relax on the porch with your favorite book. Return home exhausted and inspired from endless adventures or well-rested and refreshed from escaping the rush of modern life. The choices are all yours. Regardless of your plans, La Paloma Triste (The Sad Dove) is an ideal home away from home for your visit the Big Bend.

My wife and I really enjoyed our quiet time out in the country. The cabin was well appointed and the beds were very comfortable. We couldn’t have asked for anything more. And the stargazing was amazing.

We felt liike we were living the natural wonderland of West Texas, but inside, in a very comfortable, well-air-conditioned house. Once you went outside onto the shady back porch you were in the Chihuahuan Desert conveniently observing part of the Guadalupe Mountains. The west entrance to Big Bend National Park was a short drive away. We would definitely consider staying here again.
This house was perfect for our family trip to see both the national and the state park. The property has a beautiful 360 view of the desert with ocotillos, birds, and mountains everywhere. Willow mountain right next to it is a lovely sight.

We enjoyed our 3-day stay at La Paloma Triste. The peaceful beauty of the property is a big draw. Stargazing each night and watching the sunrise in the morning made for wonderful experiences. The managers answered all communications very promptly. We would definitely stay here again.
We also stayed here 7 years ago, and this time it was just as good. Clean property, which is not easy in a dusty desert environment. Adobe house never gets too hot even with air conditioners off during the heat of the day. Enjoy the extreme QUIET sitting on porch in the morning and early evening. Probably the best accommodations in the area for 2-4 people wanting to make day trips into Big Bend NP.

This was a perfect place for a visit to Terlingua and Big Bend. In a beautiful location just ten minutes from the businesses in Terlinqua and not far from the national park. Comfortable beds, bathrooms in both bedrooms, a nice big kitchen, and a great wood stove with plenty of wood. I loved looking out at night at the ski from the seats outside. It really was all I hoped for.
Easy access to BBNP. Super close to Study Butte and Terlingua, but still very private. Great sunrises and sunsets that you can watch from the front porch. We saw a couple of javelina walk by the first night. No television but we didn’t mind at all, we were busy hiking and exploring, so we went to bed early every night. The WiFi is good if you want to stream something on your phone or laptop. The shower is a little rustic, but it works just fine and there is plenty of hot water. Would definitely stay there again!
We had everything we needed for our week's stay. the advice to gas up in Alpine and buy food in the real grocery stores there was very helpful. The home is small but adequate. We spent very little time there since we were out sightseeing by 8:30 am every day. The Wi-Fi was good, laptop and phones worked well. I got sick, recovered in 24 hrs., & Daryl did arrange for messy laundry to be picked up early rather than let it set. A good time was had.

The owners are delightful, and the house is on open desert near Big Bend, offering quietude and beautiful views. The house is old and quaint, and as such could use some TLC touches to make it a bit more comfortable.
The house is beautiful and perfectly captures the west Texas feel. It was very convenient for visiting both the state and national parks and terligua, but off the beaten path enough for some solitude. Kitchen had everything we needed and was very clean. No tv, but that was a plus- more time for star gazing. Only critique was shower pressure was very low, but it wasn't a big issue for us as we were out hiking every day. Would definitely recommend! It exceeded our expectations.
This house was perfect to come back to after a long day of hiking! Beds were comfortable. We did not use any kitchen stuff so we are unable to comment on the kitchenware but over all a great place to stay!
The home is just as described on the website. Beds are very comfortable and the back porch is nice. It is close to a couple of properties but still very private. Kitchen is well stocked with cooking utensils. Home is very roomy, lots of space to spread out.
We had a maintenance issue, I reached out to Janet at 6:45am by email and she responded almost immediately!
June/July warning: this is no fault of the property owners but I would heed a warning of a June/July stay due to the extreme heat. Although the home stays comfortable with the 3 window units the kitchen stays in the low 80’s and the water temperature stays almost too hot to shower with. Again this is no fault of the home/owners its just part of the environment.
I WOULD absolutely stay here again any of the other 10 months of the year!
Stayed here with my Dad and explored Big Bend. What a great experience! The perfect house for what we were doing! It feels like history right when you pull in! Will be recommending!!
Beautiful and remote location. The home was clean, comfortable and practical for hikers at Big Bend. The drive way is gravel with some sharp turns, so best to get there before dark!
My family and I loved this cabin. It was immaculate when we arrived. The location is fantastic, just a few minutes outside of Terlingua and 10 minutes away from the entrance of Big Bend. The instructions were very easy to understand and made it impossible to get lost. If we return to Big Bend, we’ll rent this cabin again.
Our first time to the Big Bend area. The house felt like home right away. It was exactly as described. He felt like we were visiting grandma. The porch swing was a perfect way to end the evening with a glass of wine. Plenty of space to explore. Thank you, I would not change a thing.
The Sad Dove was pure perfection! The home is located just north of Big Bend National Park, and secluded. Picturesque views anywhere on the property and all the windows provided plenty of natural light and allowed us to enjoy the view inside! The home is beautifully adorned with vintage pieces & decor. I loved the step back in time with still having modern luxuries. I highly recommend this property!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at La Paloma Triste. The location was excellent- close to town/park, but secluded and private. Coming back after a long day in the park, we relaxed on the porch and star-gazed at night. I highly recommend this house and hope to return again one day.
We had the best time staying here. The location was perfect. The views from every window where phenomenal. We were comfortable and the house had all we needed. The directions provided were very clear and helpful. I would jump at the chance to stay here again.
Delightful two bedroom with great veranda. Sunsets were fantastic. Very charming interior - all wood floors. Location to the park was also excellent. Would definitely stay again! Steve Joyce
