July 2015 Gosau valley, Salzkammergut region, Austria Gosau is situated along the Gosaubach stream in the Salzkammergut region. The center of the town is at an elevation of 767 meters. At the southern end of Gosau there is a road leading to the Vorderer Gosausee, a lake with a scenic view of the Dachstein. The valley around Gosau was settled in the 13th century by monks from St. Peter's Abbey in Salzburg. Timber production for the salt mine in Hallstatt was a major industry. In the past timber production and salt mining in neighboring Hallstatt have historically been the major industries in Gosau. Today, tourism is the main source of income, although raising livestock, mainly cattle, is also an important economic activity. This view is from above the Gablonzer hut in the Gosaukam range (altitude ca. 1.600 meters).
July 2015 Vorderer Gosausee lake, Salzkammergut, Austria Vorderer Gosausee is a natural mountain lake in alt. ca. 1.000 meters. It is 1,8 km long and 500 meters wide. It is deep on average 35 meters and due to its clear water it is popular with the divers. On the east side it is surrounded by the Dachstein massif and glacier. The glacier is the source of the water of the lake filling it with underground streams. Dachstein has prominence of 2.000 metres over the lake which gives just an impressive view.
