Convenient to Slopes!

The rooms are a little dated but for the convenience and the price it was a great getaway! Hotel and ski rental staff were very friendly.

I have never walked into a room as poorly maintained - cleanliness was non-existent! The hotel staff was nice enough to change us into a condo at the same resort but Schuss was extremely disappointing.

The hotel property is dated as is the furniture and bedding. The sheets were thin, the blankets were very worn and ripped. The bathroom although appearing to be clean, was tired. The whole facility smelled musty. The hotel hallway was left unlocked throughout the night. The office at Schuss Village was closed by the time we got there (9PM) and no helpful instructions were left as to what to do. We then asked another guest what they did and they suggested we go to Summit Village (another Shanty creek property) to get assistance.) It was a 10 min drive but we were able to check in at that location. We would not stay there again, especially since it was a 45 min drive from Traverse City, where we were spending our time. The one benefit to it all was the price.

Old and Older

If this is the last reasonably priced place near Traverse City, go to Chicago for the weekend instead. The hotel does not have a staffed desk, you have to drive to Shanty Creek to check in, about a 15 mile round trip. When we returned we found out our key didn't fit. 1 hour later the maintenance man showed up, his key didn't fit either. 30 minutes later we finally got in a room. It appears this place is about to be closed, the pool is shut down, and the property looks mostly abandoned. I would not want to be here during the week, I think you would be the only guest.

It depends what you're looking for...

I was looking for a place to stay near Traverse City, as we wanted to attend the Cherry Festival. This resort came up as an affordable option. Within the huge resort are hotel rooms, cabins, condo's, chalets, and a host of other options. Hotels.com got us into the Windcliff buildings. Each of three separate condo houses 8 rooms. Ours had a view of the lake, and was quite private. Pros include privacy, view, microwave & fridge, indoor and outdoor pools, and *excellent* service. Cons were that we really struggled to figure out where we were staying (where to check in--the address & photo given by hotels.com did not match what my husband found on Mapquest, nor the place we actually checked in or stayed.) Also, it is not an easy/quick commute to Traverse City. Once we figured that out, we became content with the place. We were pleased that on July 5th, this resort had its own amazing fireworks display for its guests.

Beautiful but too hard to find

The hotel itself was great. Our room was modern and the bed were extremely comfortable. The lobby bar and resturant overlooked a beautiful lake. Views were breath taking. Finding the Lakeview Hotel part of the Schuss Village resort was rediculous. Shanty Creek Resort is extremely large and hard to navigate. The website did not make mention to where exactly our hotel was located on this large resort. We drove around for about 15 minutes looking for some signs of life and finally gave up and called the front desk of the hotel. Once we were given directions it was smooth sailing. The hotel was beautiful but too out of the way for my taste.

Very bad

This room was in the Schuss Village which was basically closed and mostly deserted-- no employees there. Very over priced for the condition- the whole build is run down, curtains hanging off the bars, carpeting very worn and with wrinkles; old bathroom tub and fixtures. Lighting bad -Not even close to what you would expect @ $185+ per nite.

Right at bottom of Slopes, but so uncomfortable

I like staying here because it is obviously convenient, being right at the bottom of Schuss Mountain, and it has that old, alpine feel. The room was very clean, and also very small which did not really matter to us though. The beds are so uncomfortable and really worn. All of our backs hurt the next morning and none of us slept well because you can feel the springs of the mattress. The pool opened late and closed early, which was very inconvenient and useless to us since it opened and closed the same time as the lifts for the mountain. We spent our whole day snowboarding and it would have been nice to come back to the room and hang out in the pool and jacuzzi for awhile. You would think they would have later hours for that reason. There was only one front desk attendant working (who was very friendly and polite!), but when we went to check out we had to stand around waiting for about 10-15 minutes because she was nowhere to be found. The service in the restaurant there is always bad. I've been there several times and have never had good service. They are extremely slow everytime we eat there, even when it is not busy. The food is pretty good though...everything from the pizza to the gyro to the desserts. I will return, simply because of the convenience.

Ski Weekend Getaway

The room had an odd smell like old cleaners. The room appeared to be pretty clean otherwise. The wall paper is so old it has probably soaked up smells from over the years. Carpet seemed newer and clean so not the culprit of the smell. Fortunately we spent most of the time skiing and that was great for all levels. Workers are pleasant and helpful. Bring snacks as the store marks up their prices on pop, chips, etc. because they know they got you. .The restaurant breakfast buffet and ordering a lunch off their menu was quite acceptable. Do not eat on the cafeteria side. It is all mass cooked and kept under heat lamps all day. Tasted horrible. Room had a fridge and microwave so plan ahead for snacking.

Great Get-a-way!

This is a very charming get-a-way, with wonderful views of Northern Michigan at it's best. The accommodations are comfortable, if not super new, and the food is very good. The staff was very helpful and friendly. I would definately stay here again, for a romantic weekend, or a family stay.

Beautiful views

Overall good experience. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Our balcony had a broken screen door and there was a huge cobweb out our balcony. The mattresses were too soft but the room was clean.

Nice Place for Families

The hotel staff was very friendly and helpful. Our room was comfortable and had a sliding glass door with a patio. The view was really beautiful. It is a little tricky driving in and out of the development -- more signs would be helpful.

great hotel

Schuss Village is a run down place. Lucky we were transfered to the Summit Village (otherwise known as lakeview) Everything at the Summit was fantasic except the shower head. Great outdoor pool with a spectacular view.

Crappy hotel!!

Very expensive for such a run down crappy hotel! First of all, you cant even check in near the hotel, you have to drive 4 miles out of the way to the nice hotel to check in. When we finally got in, the room was so old, and out dated. The room actually smelled. When we went to turn on the lamp, the light bulb was burned out. When I laid on the uncomfortable bed, I actually found a bug. We called the front desk (4 miles away), and they actually agreed with us that it was a horrible hotel and agreed they should not rent out the rooms. Why they rent them out is beyond me! We woke up extra early and left because we didnt even want to use the crappy shower. There were no restaurants near there. The pool was closed, and there were absolutely no activities. We were very dissappointed with our stay, especially for the amount of money that we paid! Would never reccommend this hotel to ANYONE.

Schuss Village Resort -Would recommend

Loved the area, would definitely stay again for a longer period of time. Room was nice and very clean. Only down side, the lodge that we stayed at did not have a front desk and the main office was 2 miles away....no ice. Other than that had a great time.

Schuss is not Cedar Village

The Schuss hotel is many miles from the Cedar Creek resort. You check in at Cedar Creek during the summer (other times?), but you have to drive 5 miles to Schuss. The lobby was locked and there was no staff at the Schuss hotel, although some of the surrounding buildings were staffed. For my trip I only needed a place to stay on a holiday weekend, so it was fine. If I was treating this as the destination, it would have been dissapointing. I would not recommend late arrival.

There were no employees at the hotel facility. There was a phone inside one of the doors to call a different hotel and an employee at that facility brought room keys/key card. Everything but the outdoor heated pool was closed for the summer. Nice room though. Nice, kept-up pool. Nothing open that was close. At least it was quiet.

Do not stay here, drive further!

This hotel has not been updated for probably 30 years. The rooms still use a metal key, nothing in the rooms match, and depending on the room the lighting is terrible. Drive further or stay at cedar village or shanty, schuss is horrible.

Schuss Village

When we arrived late in the evening it was difficult to navigate the somewhat dark property as it was much larger (and nicer looking) than I had expected. We did find the dark front desk to discover that we had to call another front desk to check in at another property about 5 minutes away because this lobby was closed for construction. There was not much around, but since we had not eaten dinner, the person at the front desk was very helpful in recommending the bar/restaurant that was actually in the building right behind our room's building. She even called to confirm that they were still serving food. They were only serving pizza, and to be honest we were not expecting much. It was however FANTASTIC pizza (and we are from Chicago). The bar/restaurant was fairly empty, but it seemed a cool place to hang out, and the drinks we had with our meal were also very good. Our server also gave us a few recomendations for breakfast and actually wrote them down when he brough our bill. The room itself was so so. It was nice and clean and comfortable, only dated looking. The property seemed nice and had the feel of a ski resort (maybe it is in the winter?). I would definately stay here again if I was going through the area.

Nice place to visit but no for a long period of time

Hotal wasn't too bad. They did however take some of our cloths by mistake to clean and we never got them back. The day we checked out we asked if they could track them down and they couldn't find them. They did however reinburse us for the cost of new clothes. The outside pool needs to be remoddled but the inside of the hotel was nice. There are shops around the hotel but none were open so we couldn't buy anything. The area in itself is very pretty and the view from the hotel restaurent is very nice.
