  • This will ever be known as the chateau of Josephine Baker. She had been a singer of international renown with an extraordinary career. Born in the States in 1906, she emigrated to France and became a citizen in 1937 when she married a Jew, but not before knowing the street life in America where she’d had to sleep in cardboard shelters and scavenge in garbage bins. For ten years she was the lead in the Folies Bergeres, and admired by all who saw her. Shirley Bassey once said, “I swear in all my life I have never seen, and probably never shall see again, such a spectacular singer and performer." During WWII She won the Croix de Guerre for her work with the French Resistance. When the Germans invaded France she moved to the chateau where she helped Belgian refugees and ultimately adopted 12 children. She was the first Afro-American to star in a major motion picture (Zouzou) and was the only female speaker in the civil rights march to Washington with Martin Luther King and was offered the lead in the movement when he was assassinated but she declined. When the builders refurbishing the chateau sent her almost broke, Grace Kelly, a close friend, offered her accommodation on the Riviera.

We had an outstanding time at this beautifully located accommodation, surrounded by peace and nature. The atmosphere was very warm and family-like, especially during dinner, which is available on request and felt more like a shared meal among friends than a restaurant experience. The breakfast was delicious and offered a perfect start to the day. All in all, a truly enjoyable and memorable stay!

An amazing place tucked away in the countryside but conveniently located for lots of the area’s attractions. We came in late Sept and the weather was warm enough for us to picnic our evening meal on the terrace in peace and quiet. The hosts are brilliant nothing is too much trouble and spent time explaining the best places to go. The rooms are of a really high standard and decorated impressively. We cannot recommend this place highly enough.

Une très belle et agréable découverte

Nous avons passé une nuit aux Chênes Rouges. Nous avons apprécié l'accueil par Sylvie et Pascal, la chambre, la déco, le site et l'environnement très agréable, bien que la météo n'ait pas été de la partie ! Nous vous recommandons aussi la table d'hôte, Pascal nous a régalés avec de la truite de Dordogne et un dessert aux fraises du Périgord. Ils ont aussi un tout nouveau gite pour deux, que nous avons visité et qui nous donne envie de revenir plus longtemps ! Le Périgord et la rivière Dordogne ont tellement d'atouts....

On conseille cette chambre d'hôtes

Séjour très agréable chez des hôtes très cordiaux et serviables. Très bon dîner fait de produits régionaux pris avec nos hôtes. Site très calme et avec un bel environnement. Très jolie chambre spacieuse. Pour les convives qui aiment les visites, ne passez pas à côté du château des Milandes qui fut celui de Joséphine Baker. On conseille d'aller faire un tour à la boutique de la ferme qui se situe à deux pas de la chambre d'hôtes et qui vend des produits régionaux.

We were there one night and I wish we could have spent more time there. The room is private and conveniently located--plus, it's pretty, comfortable, and brand new. Breakfast was delicious. The host was welcoming, helpful, and very nice. We would stay there again.

Très bon accueil du propriétaire, malgré une arrivée en avance. Ludmilla sa charmante épouse rencontrée peu après s'est montrée pleine d'humour. Maison bien tenue, literie confortable, petit déjeuné parfait, à deux pas du château des Milandes, vraiment à recommander.

Fab stay highly recommend

Wonderful stay. Bed and bedding very comfortable. The hosts were extremely friendly even though my French wasn’t great. Breakfast was fab - homemade food served with smiles. Nothing was too much. Highly recommend.

A little piece of heaven!

What a find! Les Chenes Rouges is a B&B, but not any ordinary B&B! The owners are charming, they rescued us when we got lost and arrived somewhat late, and provided us with a welcoming drink, and made sure we didnot go hungry!!! The rooms are beautifully decorated, exactly as you see in the photos! The breakfasts were typically French but with local produce, home made jams and fruit from the trees in the garden. To top it off a great swimming pool, just right for a dip after a busy day siteseeing!
