"The leads had gone cold and staking out the place turned out to be a dead end. It was time to call it. The night was dark and I arrived at the Sweet Home Inn at midnight. The lights were off and the front door was locked. Was it too late to check in? My stomach turned at the thought of sleeping in the sedan. I rang the bell and waited. Nothing. I rang it once more and then, to my great relief a woman appeared. She opened the door, and in exchange for cash she put a key down on the counter and pushed it towards me. Our eyes met, and for a brief moment I thought I saw something there, some kind of knowing. But I was too exhausted to speak. Nothing could save me now but a hot shower and a warm bed. Home Sweet Home I thought to myself. And it was. Even if just for a night."
