Appreciate the tranquility in the well-kept gardens and climb to the terrace for a marvelous vista of the town, the sea and the surrounding valleys.

Monuments, panoramic views and tree-lined paths characterize the hilltop park of the Villa Comunale dei Cappuccini. Its picturesque grounds surround a former ducal estate. Venture into the historic caves thought to have been used by Capuchin friars or for defensive purposes.

Footpaths framed by elegant balustrades and hedges wrap around the greenery of this park. Look for some of the intriguing monuments and try to make sense of the unusual angles of the white abstract sculpture depicting a man on a horse. Sit on the edge of a large fountain containing a rocky ornament at its core. Wander through the manicured gardens and between lovely pine trees.

Relax on one of the many benches and let your kids frolic in the children’s play area, which has a slide, a climbing frame and other fun features. Dense thickets of woodland provide ample shade and shelter for a picnic in the park.

Climb up to the observation point for marvelous views of Atri and the Adriatic Sea. Also visible are the valleys of the Terre del Cerrano and a forest. The viewing deck consists of a terrace outlined by a stylish railing and classic lanterns.

If you are feeling active, use the park’s sports facilities, including a soccer field and a basketball court. Relax with snacks and refreshments in the charming café. Among the most intriguing features of the park are the caves, which are thought to have served as protection from invading Saracens. These grottoes were also used by Capuchin friars as stables.

Walk east from the historic center of Atri for a few minutes to reach the Villa Comunale dei Cappuccini. On the way, you’ll pass other attractions including the Museo Capitolare di Atri, the Museo Civico Etnografico and the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta.
