About this property

Thistledown Farm's Sheep Shed Cottage

  • Thistledown Farm's Sheep Shed Cottage was created by joining 2 handhewn post and beam barns. Located on the beautiful Thistledown Farm property, it is furnished with unique antiques and old barn finds. The sleeping loft is accessible only by a ship's ladder. Adults and kids alike LOVE it. It is a great place to kick back! The accommodations are rustic-more like "glamping" than a dolled-up seaside cottage. This is a seasonal space, and bookings are only available from mid-May to mid-October.
    The space
Thistledown Farm's Sheep Shed Cottage abounds with rustic barn charm throughout. It has a large screened dining/sitting area with a fully equipped summer kitchen, comfortable separate living room space, bathroom, outdoor private hot water shower, and a sleeping loft. It is adjacent to a large stone terrace with a dining table, an outdoor fireplace, and a separate fire pit that is to die for. A bocce/croquet court completes the amenities. There is a fantastic freshwater swimming hole, saltwater boat launch, and 2 nature preserves are on our road within walking distance. You can't beat it!
If your preferred dates are booked, take a look at our 5 other listings on this property: Thistledown Farm's Pennysworth, Thistledown Farm's Udder Heaven, and new to the farm, Penny's Perch, a private yurt, and the Penobscot and the Pemaquid, 2 large safari-type "Glamping" tents.
    Guest access
Sheep Shed Cottage guests have the cottage to themselves as well as access to adjoining outdoor spaces.
Thistledown Farm has an expansive lawn available to all guests, complete with lawn games such as croquet, bocce, horseshoes, frisbee, and more. Guests also have use of our kayaks.
    Other things to note
The sleeping loft has Air Conditioning and heaters. Extra fans and portable electric heaters are also available for the closed-in areas. Please note: The loft is only accessible by a ship's ladder. It is not suitable for small children or those who struggle with climbing ladders.

Well Behaved dogs are welcome! On this note, please anticipate the presence of guest dogs on Thistledown Farm.

If you are looking for a fun activity to do right here on Thistledown Farm, you can learn to weave your own colorful lobster rope doormat. Our Farm was previously used as the location of The Maine Float Rope Co., home of the popular Down East Doormats. A cottage industry, The Maine Float Rope Co. made mats and rugs woven out of reclaimed lobster trap rope. Now, with a former weaver on Thistledown Farm's staff, lessons can be arranged to learn how to make your own mat. There is a fee and we ask for advance notice of your interest.

Our little peninsula has a wonderful freshwater swimming hole, saltwater boat launch, beautiful vistas, and 2 public preserves. Town and Route 1 are only 5 minutes away with galleries, restaurants, farm stands, a pharmacy and a grocery store. Thistledown Fram is located minutes away and a short drive from Damariscotta, Camden, Rockland, Pemaquid Beach, Round Pond, Fort Henry, Pemaquid Lighthouse, and the ferry to Monhegan Island. We are on the way to Acadia, Downeast Maine, Moosehead Lake, and Mt. Katahdin. The airport and the city of Portland are a 1 hour and 15-minute drive.

Please note that the only fire allowed throughout the property is in the firepit or cooking grill.

After each guest checks out, we spend a considerable amount of time cleaning to ensure that Sheep Shed Cottage is spotless for your arrival. All towels and bedding are sent out to a commercial laundry with specially equipped UV light anti-virus equipment. Please sweep up after yourself, remove all garbage, strip the beds of bedding, and place all sheets and towels in the hamper provided. We very much care about the health and comfort of all our guests and hope you will too.

Thistledown Farm’s Sheep Shed Cottage is a gift. The grounds, location, living quarters and best of all Penny, our host, were amazing. If you are looking for that taste of Maine it’s all right here. Around ever corner, down any street you will find a piece of Maine in its true habitat. So much to explore and so much to love. If you have the time, make sure to spend some with Penny, her stories are plentiful and extremely intriguing.Thank you, We look forward to our next visit.Lorna
