Great location for hiking both Turkey Run and Shades State Parks. Rustic decor excellent for two well-behaved but large Labrador Retrievers. Would be super for an active family, too, with plenty of space indoors and out.

Fabulous house in the woods
This property is beyond fabulous! The house is cozy and well stocked and the outdoor area is so much fun! The seating around the fire pit is perfect (no need to pack camping chairs!), the hot tub is big and the hammock and children’s swing are perfect touches! The hiking is fabulous and the privacy is excellent!

Perfect nature getaway cabin
My group of 12 had an amazing time at the cabin. The location to the hiking trails walkable from the cabin was a great feature. The house was clean and well stocked. Communication was amazing and the owners clearly know what they are doing. Being secluded in nature and not hearing any outside noise was so relaxing. Will definitely be booking again in the fall.

Home Away From Home
This was our second summer in a row staying at this awesome cabin! It is so close to Shades State Park and Turkey Run State Park that you barley have to use your vehicle while staying here. The cabin itself is very cool and rustic chic! We were pleasantly surprised to find that the cabin was updated even more since we last stayed! The cabin is also very clean and we never feel like that is compromised while we are here. This time during our stay we encountered a random derecho storm towards the latter half of our stay. We lost power and had to stay a night with no electricity. Thank God we had a fireplace to use and it was still fun and cozy! This place already holds a special place in our hearts. Truly, our home away from home!! :)

Spring Break Get-away
The cabin was cozy and comforting. The wood burning fireplace was perfect for the March weather. The master bedroom was spacious and the bed was very comfortable! Even though it was March and nothing was green we really enjoyed the woods and the deer activity. With hiking nearby we didn't even need to get in the car to drive anywhere. The hot tub was enjoyable too for that time of year!! Would love to come back during the summer months!!

We had a great time! Proximity to Turkey Run and Shades was perfect. We prepared all our meals in the kitchen and loved all the outdoor spaces, especially the upper deck and firepit area. I would love to come back in the summer and fall to see the many trees on the property with leaves!

Cozy Cabin Great Location
This is my second stay at Sugar Creek Resort for a weekend of hiking Turkey Run & Shades State Parks. The cabin has the perfect location - about 15 miles fromTurkey Run & a mile from Shades. The cabin had everything my sister, nieces & I needed for a comfortable stay. The kitchen is well-stocked, the beds comfortable, the fireplace cozy & the hot tub heavenly! Both of my visits have been in the winter, but the beautiful yard with a covered grill, fire pit & table and chairs would be great fun in the spring, summer & fall. The check-in / check-out process was seamless & Gabe checked in via email to make sure our visit was going well. Thank you for the wonderful weekend!

Excellent location perfect for families
My family (wife, 3 kids, mom, and dogs) and I needed a quiet place to get away for the week. This lovely cabin could not have been better. It had great views, great location, and a hot tub. The trail to shades state park is right next to the property. It is wonderful hiking. I love how quiet and peaceful it was, but still with all the great amenities. We can't wait to come back again.

My wife and I, along with our black lab, booked a weekend away in early December and loved the location and property! It's walkable to Shades and has some amazing hiking options. Was nice to come back and soak in the hot tub after a day of hiking, then warm up next to the fireplace.

Great place to stay with friends and our dog!!even had 2 dog dishes Loved the outdoor space, grills, firepit(which could of been dug out some) chairs provided hot tub and wood on site, just leave some $$Huge bonus we like our fires.If you like to watch tv only one downstairs, bedroom,loft and bathroom upstairs with balcony to have coffee. Kitchen had all you needed, fridge did have missing shelves on door, not a big deal, had electric stove, nice washer and dryer and towels were provided, My suggestion bring your big beach towel for getting out of hot tub. Couldn’t figure out dishwasher but just washed by hand. Internet is spotty, expected tho your in the woods Great time and will be back next year! Thanks Gabe

Fantastic restful refuge with everything you need for disengaging from society. Bring hiking boots and fishing poles for outdoor activities. Home is comfortably rustic and all kitchen tools are available. Can't say enough good things about Gabe!!

Fun weekend
Meet my extended family here with my family for a long weekend. It was so nice to be able to hike in the beautiful trails right from the driveway. We enjoyed our staying all together in a clean cabin with all the kitchen things we needed.

Great cabin for local hiking
We were only able to stay 2 nights at this property, but it was worth every cent! We went with our son, our friends and their son, and our dogs. Very thankful the property was dog friendly! Cabin was VERY clean and perfect size for our group. Cabin had everything we needed and more. So many nice touches. You can tell that the owners are very considerate and thoughtful in running this property. Our kids had a BLAST! Cabin is right across from Shades and close to so much great hiking. Owners were so kind and accommodating. We plan to all go back for a much longer stay next year!

Our group stayed a long weekend to run in an event in neighboring Attica, IN. I contacted the owner our first morning via phone and have included a portion of the subsequent text transcript below (VRBO limits the size of a review): Hello Gabe, we ran vinegar through both coffee pots as you suggested and the old white one that you had in the front closet seems to work alright now. You mentioned that the hard water affects the performance, but we noticed (when we were running the coffee pot and microwave at the same time and tripped the circuit breaker) that the water softener didn’t have any salt in it. That may be why the pots struggle to keep up with the hard water. We ate our dinner in shifts tonight, washing dishes in between, because we were short of tableware. Would it be possible for you to bring more by so we can all eat together as a family? Thanks so much! Hi Jessica- Gabes currently traveling home from New York. This is Liza, his wife. There is no way for anyone to bring you bowls. Hope that doesn’t ruin your weekend! In almost 6 years of running this place, I’m not sure we’ve had such specific requests during a stay. I’m sure you’ll manage. Enjoy the trees! Beauty/location aside, we’re having quite a different functional experience than what is listed on VRBO, which advertises accommodations for 10. When our group of 9 arrived we were one full bed short of what the photos on VRBO show (one person is on a couch, which isn’t a huge deal—we expect an adventure on vacation), but the kitchen is inadequately stocked. The coffee pot wasn’t working and there are several basic cooking items lacking. These are not a big deal on their own, but if you advertise sleeping for a group of 10, it’s important for that group to be able to sit down and have a meal together without eating in shifts. (NOTE: Owners have since changed the listing to show accommodation for up to 8.) All of these basic things could be remedied with a $20 trip to the Goodwill. And of course our weekend won’t be ruined. We were just hoping for a simple drop off. Also, we had mice get into our grocery bag last night and one of the adults saw a mouse in the downstairs bathroom. Then RADIO SILENCE. No reply or response whatsoever from either owner. It’s clear (from being ignored) that guest experience is not a priority for the owners, so book and assume you’re on your own to deal with any issues that might arise. We will look to rent elsewhere for our next trip.

Hello everyone!!! I just saw this and it's a little devious. We had 9 bowls and 8 spoons on hand due to a wedding group taking some bowls to our other property next door and I didn't know we were short. I actually spoke to the guest the day before on the phone, while she was in town, and I said" I'll gladly reimburse you, plus gas, if you don't mind to just pop in Walmart real quick and get what you need",,she was 2 minutes away from Walmart at the time and she would not do this. I was out of town that weekend which was unusual, otherwise I would gladly fixed right away. I am truly sorry for the trouble and since then we have made sure that after a wedding the cleaning crew verifies the appropriate amount of bowls etc...

Great time..even in rain!
This property was perfect for our stay! Right between two wonderful state parks with plenty of space for multiple people. It did rain on and off during our trip, but the cabin was perfect for those rainy moments. I would recommend bringing DVDs in case you get rained in or games to enjoy! We had a great time in and out of the cabin. We really appreciated the fact that we didn't have to pay to get into the parks and we could go as many times as we wanted with the card that the owner provided for us. We will definitely be back!

Great Getaway for the Whole Family
My family spent 4th of July weekend at the log cabin. Our family members ranged in age from 10-71 + 2 senior dogs, and we all loved it. It was refreshing to disconnect from cell phones and the distractions of internet for a couple of days. I often found my teenager drawing while lounging in the hammock between two trees. My children said they want to come back every year. We enjoyed nearby hiking at both Pine Hills Nature Preserve and Shades Park. And it was definitely the quietest 4th of July we have had in a while. Note: If you aren’t used to the taste of well water, bring your own water or a water purifying pitcher.

Setting is beautiful. Weather was on and off a little dreary. The house is picturesque. Rooms are small and furnishings are minimally comfortable. Downstairs shower definitely needs a shower mat or hand rail for safety. Large windows offer beautiful views Directions and park pass were very helpful. It was all for a couple days away.

Great location close to Shades trails! Cabin is beautiful but some opportunities for maintenance. Furnace and water softener in main floor closet adjacent to bunk room and both appliances are very loud waking everyone several times a night. No insulation between walls or floors made for loud nights too. Beautiful setting, beautiful cabin but with people who stay up late and furnace/water softener -don’t plan on getting much rest!

Super cozy cabin for your family getaway. Wish there was WiFi but loved the fireplace! Couldn’t seem to get the dishwasher to work but so thankful that there was a washer and dryer for clothing. My favorite thing was the huge swing on the front porch.

Nice place but needs improvements
This property looked almost exactly like the pictures. Nice kitchen, great fireplace, warm cozy living room on a great lot. However, a big misrepresentation was the two bathroom showers. The picture shown on the site were not what the showers actually look like. Downstairs shower is extremely small, very difficult to wash your hair in because there’s not enough room to lift your arms or turn around. The upstairs shower is unfinished, faucet handle is hard to adjust, showerhead handle did not work at all, and the floor moved underneath you in the shower. Felt as though you might fall through the floor. It appears as though both showers have been torn apart and haphazardly put back together. Mice in the downstairs bedroom wall, made it uncomfortable to sleep in. This property offers a lot of extras and the owners are very warm and welcoming. If the bathrooms get fixed and the mice are taken care of this can easily be a five-star property.

Hello! The showers are actually standard shower sizes. 32" and 36" and we've updated the pictures to show the new shower curtains. We did find a loose bolt in the upstairs shower and adjusted to ensure the shower base didn't move. Everything else works work quite well. Thank you everyone for the continued feedback so we can keep this amazing place so special!
