Whiskeytown Lake

The I-5 corridor in northern California can be pretty bleak in the summer months, but you can still find an oasis here and there. This one is west of Redding, maybe about a half-hour off the Interstate. Drive west on highway 299, past Whiskytown Lake and look for a sign for Crystal Creek. This multi-tiered waterfall surrounded in green is just the thing! TRAVEL TIP: Have a long, overnight flight coming up? The water is dreamy and there is very little traffic on the lake or the road right behind me. I just unpacked my fold up chair and I was ready
A year after Whiskeytown, California was torched in the Carr Fire in July of 2018, the skeletal remains of trees still line the hills and valleys all the way to the lake’s edge. The area is hazy today as smoke from a fire in southern Oregon drifts down into Northern California.

The room and buffet breakfast were OK. The bar was outstanding and also location to the Wharf was very good. The price for this property was too high relative to the overall quality.

The Grove Inn was a comfortable and convenient stay. The room was clean, the bedding was very comfortable, and I slept extremely well. The location was easy to access and worked well for my plans in San Francisco. That said, the overall feel was more simple than elegant, and there was a noticeable room odor that detracted from the experience. While it was perfectly fine for a short stay, it didn’t quite match the ‘boutique’ feel suggested in some reviews. Overall, a decent option if comfort and location are your priorities.

Our stay at the Beacon Grand was exceptional. When we checked in Veronica was friendly, professional, and very helpful. We were also impressed to see management, Leif Abram, greeting guests in the lobby! The room was clean and provided a impressive view. We felt safe. The location is ideal for sightseeing, dining, and shopping at Union Square. We did not need a car and walked to China Town, North Beach, and to the SF Museum of Modern Art. We could not recommend the Beacon Grand more highly! WE WILL RETURN!
