Journey to Thimble Rock Point, Journey to Thimble Rock Point
- Thimble Rock Point, located in the heart of the Unaweep Canyon. If you listen close this sacred ground still echoes footsteps of the past. At first glance it is raw and rugged, a place where wildlife still roam free and skies stretch beyond the horizon. But it is also a place of calm. Here the natural world dominates in every direction. The property consists of 25 private acres. Within that area we currently offer (2) exclusive lodging experiences. Thimble Rock Point & Tabeguache Camp.
Getting there: Located just Southwest of Grand Junction. If you're traveling by car, Colorado state highways are well maintained year-round. Even so, we encourage travelers to check road conditions (CDOT) in advance for possible delays or closures. Snow plows are quick to respond to winter storms. However from November thru March all wheel drive or 4wd is required to access the A-frame.
The closest Airport is in Grand Junction, CO. Grand Junction Regional Airport, just 37 miles away. Another option guests continue to find low fares is Montrose Regional Airport
What is Thimble Rock? Thimble Rock is a 1200' monolith that rises from the canyon floor (that's the equivalent height of the Empire State building). It is the star of the show and you can't miss this behemoth with views from the A-frame, aka Thimble Rock Point. Composed mostly of granite this enormous out cropping is the most impressive monolith in the Unaweep Canyon.
Our space was built for the traveler who seeks more than shelter but an experience, the magic at Thimble Rock will evoke feelings of nostalgia, romance and the yearning to explore. Here you will be surrounded by public lands. The area offers a host of nearby activities with accommodations designed for multi-day stays. There is ample parking adjacent to the A-frame and enough room for full size vehicles to park and turn around. Trailers are NOT allowed. My interaction with guests is schedule dependent. However I typically make myself scarce unless I'm needed. In which case I do my best to always be available by phone. In addition to the resources found on our site you will find a house manual at the onsite for specific operations or instructions.
As you might have guessed the neighborhood is quite rural. But within our fences you'll find well mark roads. Each will lead to its respective lodging site. You can expect to see others on these roads, but your privacy is important, we have intentionally designed there to be distance between every site.

The view and setting were as magical as the web description. Our cat particularly enjoyed being able to watch hummingbirds and chipmunks at eye level from the side windows.The host was excellent and coordinated work he was doing elsewhere on the property so that we were not disturbed.

Owner cancelled, no notice until I sent repeated requests
Terrible experience! Owner double booked the rental and did not inform me until I sent repeated requests for arrival info - it was cancelled late the night before my arrival. Following is the facts (no opinions) for anyone to evaluate:
Reservation was made on Feb 12 and paid in full. Feb 12/13 received confirmation of reservation and communication from Nick, the owner. Reservation was for 5 nights from April 17-22. On April 14 sent request to owner (via VRBO) for access info. No reply. On April 16 (early in the day) sent a repeat request to owner (via VRBO) for access info. No Reply. Later on April 16, I sent another request to the owner for access info. No reply. Later that night I called the owner's phone and left a text message indicating that I needed the access info. Received a phone message from Nick stating "please give me a call". Called and talked with Nick about 9-10 PM (we are leaving early the next morning to stay at his rental). He said there is someone staying at the rental for the first night of our reservation and it is not available. He blamed the double booking on another rental site. He stated that my booking was made first, and said nothing about why I was not notified of any problems with my reservation. He did apologize for the problem, but had no solutions. Our reservation was cancelled later that night and our money has been completely refunded.

Magical place in the middle of nowhere
My husband and I and two boys, ages 7 & 8, stayed here for 3 nights in July. What a perfect stay it was. The boys were able to explore the mountain the property is on, we grabbed all our groceries before arriving so we didn't have to leave. Everything needed to cook is in the kitchen. The gas grill was great for quick grilling. The scenery is just stunning, especially at sunrise.
The only thing that troubled us a tiny bit is the a/c unit being over one of the beds. If the a/c is needed and turned on at night, it makes it really really cold for the bed that it's over. But the weather here is really nice in the evenings so it's not necessary to turn on a/c but we are from Houston and the blankets were a but thick for us. We will most definitely stay here again if we come back to this side of CO!
