We initially chose this property because of its proximity to the lake. Very few places on Lake Whitney have close access to the water. The property has a somewhat steep and rocky path down to a small cove, but access to our boat was appreciated.
The cottage is basic, but worked OK for our needs. I agree with several other reviewers that the price charged is on the high side of acceptable. As a host that is charging high normal pricing, I would make certain there are no outstanding issues or deferred maintenance.
To whit:
* There were multiple burned out light bulbs around the cottage. This seems like a pretty basic thing to stay on top of if you're charging $200 a night.
* The front door lock was very temperamental. It would unlock OK, but would seldom lock from the outside. If there's a special trick, it should've been noted.
* The water has a very off-putting odor. This is apparently, common in houses around the lake (we asked other property owners). A two-minute Google search identified multiple water treatment solutions for around $800. Seems a small price to pay if you're charging near the top of the mark for your property. Our rental fee alone for a three day stay would've paid for a treatment system.
* I know this has become fairly common with house rentals, but charging a hefty "cleaning fee," then expecting guests to wash their own dishes is ludicrous and it doesn't work. We pulled down several supposedly clean dishes from the shelf that were dirty. People just don't respond well to paying cleaning fees then having to wash their own dishes...so they just don't. It's funny that if you own a restaurant, there are laws you have to follow about water temperature when washing dishes, etc., but if you own a rental cottage, your guests are in charge of washing the dishes. For all we know, somebody's four year old might have washed them!
Lastly, there was zero interaction with the owners who lived two doors down. I sort of expected a brief confirmation with them at check-in ("Is everything OK? "Let us know if you need anything, etc."), but there was none. We even waved at them a couple of times when we saw them sitting on their porch, but there was no response. And no, I wasn't expecting an intrusive visit (thank God they didn't), but a brief acknowledgement of our existence would've been nice.
