About the Area

About the Area

Nestled just 4 miles inside the southern entrance of Yosemite National Park is the charming and historic town of Wawona. Located at the base of Chilnualna Falls (the second-highest vertical drop waterfall in Yosemite), and home to the principal trailheads into the southern Yosemite wilderness, Wawona is also the closest town to the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias.
Wawona has the feel of a small town but is bustling with activity! Over 160 residents, including Yosemite Park employees, live in Wawona and can be seen gathering at the town's community center, playing a pickup game of basketball at the elementary school, jogging on one of the many picturesque trails, or simply walking their dogs and baby strollers through the winding residential streets. The historic Wawona Swinging Bridge boasts the best natural water slide in the Park! The historic village is filled with docents, stagecoach rides, horseback rides, and barn dances in the summer season, and the Wawona Meadow Loop offers year-round riparian meadow wildlife viewing.
Wawona was known to the local Native American Miwok in their language as Pallachun (a good place to stay). It is located entirely within Yosemite National Park (it preceded the founding of the park as a national recreation area) and is located on the South Fork of the wild and scenic Merced River, on the main highway (State Route 41) from Fresno to Yosemite Valley.
Galen Clark, who helped gain preservation legislation for Mariposa Grove and what later became part of Yosemite National Park, occupied the Wawona area in 1855 and established a tourist rest and modest ranch, which he later sold and made into a hotel and resort property (the Wawona Hotel). The Wawona post office was established in 1878 and was originally called Clark's Station.
The Redwoods in Yosemite has over 110 vacation rental homes and is proud to say that all of them are located in Wawona. All are within walking distance to everything that Wawona has to offer, and every one of them is surrounded by the majesty of Yosemite National Park!

Lots of space

We enjoyed staying in this very airy and roomy property. Layout worked well for our 4 adults and one teenager. The kicker table and the "volleyball court " in the yard provided some sporty entertainment. Cabin is located somewhat at the entrance of Wawona vacation community, which makes for easy in and out. There is a small market in walking distance, which has a bit of everything. Their fresh coffee is pretty good! Cabin is older but upgraded and in good condition, e.g. new carpets, good mattresses, remodeled bathrooms etc. There are enough pots , plates, silverware etc. Not like previous reviewers, we found the cabin in clean condition, and there was also von need for extra towels. We would stay here again.

Absolutely beautiful!

This home is literally inside the park in Wawona. The drive there was breathtaking. Stunningly beautiful area, with hiking trails close by. The home is very spacious, huge kitchen/dining area. There is no food or condiments in the kitchen. There were coffee filters, but no coffee or sugar/creamers. There was a little detergent, but be sure to hit a grocery store on your way before the park. There is a small mart in the park, but everything is pretty expensive. Large deck with lots of seating. Beds are very comfortable. The home was very clean. A/C worked well, it was 90 degrees there when we went. My only compliant is there weren't enough towels provided. We had to wash them several times. Overall, it was a perfect spot in Yosemite.

Ignore all the reviews about the property being dirty! We loved our stay and would gladly stay there again for another trip to Yosemite! First, the home is large and spacious, with a big family room for after-hike movie or game nights. Though the property is within the Yosemite National Park itself, it sports full wi-fi and Dish for entertainment. Second, our family truly valued the way the kitchen was well-stocked. 8x8 cake pan? Check. Cookie sheets? Check. Stainless steel frying pan? Check. Mixer? Check. Anything and everything we needed - it is stocked in the kitchen. I personally also like gas stoves better than electric, and that was another aspect that I appreciated. Beds in bedrooms sleep well and bathrooms clean. I wouldn't advise having two people shower at once because then you'll have an ice bath, but other than that we really loved the place! One final extra plus - since the property is within the park, you only need to pay for entrance once. It skips a huge line (especially on the South Entrance) to get to the Yosemite Valley and is a tremendous time saver, taking about 20 - 30 minutes to get to the valley.

Labor weekend

We really liked the house and the location. However the cleanliness was questionable. There were couple of bowls in the kitchen which had multiple stains, and in one of the bedrooms on the second floor there were some sticky packages dated 2018.... they probably suppose to be for some insects or whatever but still I didn’t expect to find it there. Mattress in the master bedroom needs to be replaced, it’s old and we couldn’t sleep well. One of the requirements was to take off the trash and put it in to the special dumpsters which were not around in the area. The only one we could find was by the reservation office!!! If property management point this as a mandatory action then trash bins should be provided by the house, either next to it or in the 1-2 houses neighborhood. The house has all necessary kitchen staff and pans, grill and outdoor table.

The Burns Family Reunion

What a lovely home! Thank you for making our family reunion so special for our family from Australia and California. This is a great home for afternoon rest while the remaining family members head down to the Valley floor. Our first visit to The Redwoods In Yosemite was in 1973, and we've returned several times as my children were growing up. We thank you for your comfortable home, and the family time we have shared here, wish we had had more time to eat on the lovely deck!
