Discover ruined British forts, climb small mountains and purchase bottles of specialty rum from the quaint shops that line the narrow streets of this popular town on St. Lucia.

Gros Islet is a town full of historic sights, a thriving marina and plenty of resorts, villas and hotels. In recent decades, it has evolved from a tranquil fishing community into a top sightseeing attraction. Make your way around the historic center for a glimpse into the island’s fascinating past.

Take advantage of the year-round hot weather with a trip to one of the beaches, such as the narrow sandy stretch of Gros Islet Beach and the secluded strand of Pigeon Point Beach. The town also has the Rodney Bay Marina, where you can snap photos of your favorite boats and take a trip to neighboring islands. Wander through the historic streets for the rum shops and old fishing shacks.

Bring your family to take part in the watersports activities at the popular Reduit BeachOpens in a new window. Follow the dirt road to the eastern shore of the island for the kite-surfing hub of Cas en Bas Beach and get lessons at the kite surfing school. Bring your kids to the Splash Island Water Park Saint Lucia.

Explore Pigeon Island National ParkOpens in a new window, which has 44 acres (18 hectares) of forested land that comprises two mossy peaks. The lower peak is known for Fort Rodney, which was set up by the British Navy to spy on French ships from nearby Martinique. Go diving here with the SNUBA Adventure Tour, which is a cross between snorkeling and scuba diving.

Note that the Carib and Arawak peoples populated this island before French and British settlers began to arrive in the 18th century. Today, its missionary past continues to have a strong effect on the town, which has Roman Catholic ties.

The small town can be found in the northwestern corner of St. Lucia, overlooking the horseshoe-shaped Rodney Bay. Drive northeast from the capital city of Castries for half an hour to get here.

Gros Islet is a charming town with plenty of beaches and watersports options as well as an intriguing history.

The beach is still great and Good for St Lucia in ensuring public access to all beaches. Although some hotels were refusing access: Mystique (St Lucian) was great as always in allowing access. My friends were refused access by the Star Fish, shame.
