To avoid the risks of Trebbia’s unpredictable floods, legend has it that St. Columban made a pact with the Devil: in exchange for the construction of the bridge in one night only, Devil’s reward would be the soul of the first person who would cross it. The Devil respected the agreement and in one night he built the Old Bridge with the help of a group of demons of different height and build, cause however of the structure’s irregularity. When St. Columbanus, the next morning, saw the Hunchbacked Bridge, mocked the Devil by letting a dog be the first to cross it. #blue
