All important information needed for staying at our chalet is both available on our listing and the rental agreement(I.e. contract, which guests have to agree to at the time of booking). The email that is sent before check-in is just a review/reminder of this information(by the way, this email takes approximately 2 minutes to read). When this guest arrived at the house, it was VERY apparent they had read none of it. Because of it, this guest arrived unprepared for the stay, and were not happy about it! We tried to smooth things over by having our cleaners deliver some items, but they angrily declined(something like “it’s too late now!”). After this, the guest went through(seemingly) every inch of the house pointing out things that were broken(they were wrong about most of it), and not clean. It actually got so bad that we suggested this guest leave. They decided to stay then write a review. All we will say about any of this is that we have been listed on this website for almost 20 years. Of our approximately 115 reviews, over 100 are perfect 5 star ratings, most listing cleanliness as one of the things they most liked. In fact, 19 of the 20 reviews IMMEDIATELY before this guest mentioned cleanliness as an asset! So we stand by our ratings and quality of our rental property! By the way, the part in our contract and welcome email about “cleaners are only to clean bathrooms” is really just to insure that guests don’t leave the house a total mess…of course our cleaners clean the whole house! Thanks for the good review. Not sure about the shower comment(this is the first we are hearing about it, almost a month later). I was actually at the house an hour before check-in and it worked perfectly, as it did for all of the guests before and after this stay. This guest must have accidentally shut it off at the valve (just a guess). As we've said in previous reviews, if anything like this comes up, just make a quick call, or send a text or email to us and 99% of the time will have the problem solved within minutes!

Thanks for the review. A few notes...as mentioned in our VRBO listing, the main pool and kiddie pool(it's not a hot tub:)close for the season on Labor Day. The only thing closed about the beach was swimming in the lake(which it is normally too cold by late September to do so anyway)...yes, due to bacteria from recent heavy rains. Guests are still free to sit on the beach, fish, etc... Dogs tend to sniff around when they sense/smell that other dogs have, been around. When we visit with our dogs, they always sniff around. We never smell anything ourselves, and it sounds like these guests didn't either...which we are happy about! Nonetheless, the house and carpets have been deep cleaned as of 10/5/21(which we normally do this time of year anyway)! We do ask that you bring basic linens and towels...but we provide plenty of clean blankets and pillows! Agreed that, price-wise, a 3 bedroom/2 bath, 1500sq/ft house, that sleeps 9, might not be economical for just 2 people... In this case, we usually recommend a smaller house or hotel. We have hosted 100's of happy families and groups! Once again, thank you for staying at our chalet!

When we received this review, we immediately had our cleaners return to the house(they had already been there after check out and didn't report anything) to re-check on any odd smells and any stained blankets. They could not detect any type of "pet smell", although they did find 1 blanket that was stained, which was then disposed of. Regardless, we did have the house and carpets deep cleaned(which we normally do this time of year anyway). In 15 years of renting our chalet, we have only received a 3 star review(Never anything lower) once before...about 10 years ago from a group of college kids! This past summer, we were fully booked and received ALL 5 star reviews...and, by the way, our summer guests paid about 2x the nightly rate then these guests did. We do like to keep our rates slightly higher than the norm...it usually brings higher quality guests that appreciate our beautiful, updated chalet and the awesome surrounding areas! One last note to all future guests....we, as owners, are VERY easy to get a hold of...if anything is not right when you check-in, just reach out(rather than write a sub-par review after you have stayed for 4 days), we can almost always take care of it immediately! Well, that's not really how things happened. This instant booking came in about 17 hours before check-in. Approximately 15 minutes after this guest booked I REQUESTED(not demanded) the security deposit and other necessary info for their stay. These are things that have to be done and the reservation is not truly complete until such. I was not responded to for, at least, 12 hours(not a half hour "while I was at work")., which then put us at a few short hours before check in. I did receive another inquiry for these dates that morning, and I did mention that. Not until I mentioned that, did I finally receive a response back(funny how that works). No where on our listing does it say we collect the security deposit at check in...the exact wording is..."We collect a refundable security deposit($325) separately at the time of booking. This can be paid via Paypal". We have the same process for every reservation, approximately 50 per year for the last 15 years...no issues before this! I assure you any problems with the initial steps of this process were not on our side! I am glad these guests found 100% of the experience otherwise was great!
