  • Throughout my childhood I spent so much time at this park. I always remember of thinking of it as the park in the middle of the mountains. What I never noticed as a child was how every single aspect of this park was planned out and put there for a reason. Likewise before studying the photographic image I had never thought about how we construct a image and its affordances and constraints. One thing I really want to point out in this image is that while we have this beautiful park there is a huge ugly pipe in the middle of the photograph. It is part of the necessity of the planning of the park, just like the frame is a necessity of an image. We sometimes want to forget it is there but it is a necessary part of an image and still has meaning. #appalachianechoes

  • This is the headstone of Banner Elk, North Carolina. This elk has been in the town forever, but this past year the elk has been refurbished and installed as the centerpiece of the town. This elk frames Appalachia in the sense of this small town pride in the mountains. In the background you can see the historic elementary school and rolling mountains and once again the North Carolina pride of the state flag surrounding this elk even though about 100ft to the right there is another flagpole with the same flags raised high and proud. This is where every child in this town went to school in this picturesque location but as time rolls on is Appalachia move on too? #appalachianechoes

Great place!

We loved our stay, the home was clean and had plenty towels and supplies. The owner was very responsive with questions and check in/out instructions. We loved being able to walk to restaurants and close drive to the ski resorts. We will definitely stay again soon.

Great Location - very well appointed!

A VERY short walk to downtown with all the restaurants, etc. Property was very comfortable, and had everything we needed, and then some. We stay at VRBO properties often - we’ll definitely be back here!

Organized and Convenient

Stayed for a long weekend with our teen girls to ski at Beech and Sugar. Stocked with everything you need, easy walk to town and having the garage was nice when we came back during a snow storm.

Banner Elk Ski Trip

A birthday skiing trip for my son and his friend. Great location and within walking distance to restaurants and shopping in Banner Elk. Situated in the middle to ski at Sugar Mtn and Beech Mtn. Condo was nice and clean. Good communication with the owner.

Perfect location

The property is perfectly tucked right on main street but up the hill and away from traffic. We walked to dinner, drinks and fun. Just a short drive for skiing. Very comfortable and quiet.

Ski get away

We had a wonderful ski trip with several teens staying at this house. Dana was exceptional and accessible in helping plan for our trip. The bunk bed room was great for sharing and the master was nice and quite for mama. This location is perfectly nestled between the ski slopes and allowed for everyone to walk to dinner and explore after a day on the slopes. Dana provided a sweet welcome basket with some thoughtful supplies. This home is well equipped and linens are soft and cozy. I would definitely stay here again!

Family snow trip

Visited Beech Mountain and Sugar Mountain and chose this home for its size and location. Easy to get around to either Mountain and w/in walking distance to a popular cafe/bar. Owner was quick to respond to any questions/requests. Lodging was spacious and very comfortable. Nice quiet neighborhood.

Beautiful home

Beautiful, clean, spacious home. Great location and easy check in. The house was well stocked with paper goods. Owner is very responsive and helpful. My only minor complaint is that both the king and queen mattresses were very soft/squishy.

Wonderful spot in Banner Elk

This is a lovely unit right in the heart of Banner Elk. Very spacious. Walking distance to all of the little restaurants in town and right on the edge of Lees McRae college. Five minute drive to hiking, skiing - all four seasons of activity in this town. Also very close to Mill Pond which is so relaxing. The owner was super responsive to our questions. We would definitely stay here again.

Fun Ski Weekend

My group had fun weekend! The place fit us all nicely and it was easy to locate Beech Mtn Ski resort. When it snows A LOT like it did when we visited, make sure you have 4WD and/or tire chains! The roads in the area can be a little steep and not super easy to navigate. Overall, Banner Elk is a cute area with restaurants and shops.
