Birch Aquarium showing marine life

This small but captivating aquarium offers up-close access to the wonders of the sea life of the Pacific.

There are over 60 distinct habitats represented in the Birch Aquarium, with a fascinating and biologically diverse range of creatures on show. While the attraction is not large, it packs lots of life and information into its 5,946 square metres, making it well worth a visit for the whole family – you’ll even get the chance to touch a number of the animals who reside here.Due to its strong links to the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the aquarium has a serious and scientific approach, focusing on the learning experience of its many visitors and ensuring it communicates effectively with them. But there's also plenty of fun to be had alongside the learning children and the young-at-heart will enjoy the Kelp Forest Dive Show and the daily feeding sessions which are open to the public.Gaze at the vivid colours of the strange anemones, the bright lionfish and the giant clams – producers of pearls – in the Coral Reef gallery. These fascinating creatures are examined along with the incredibly rich, but also very delicate, habitats created by coral reefs.Feel the texture of sea cucumbers and of other intertidal creatures at the Tide-Pool Plaza. Learn about the connectedness of the Earth's different ecosystems with the global climate in the Feeling the Heat exhibit, while Boundless Energy looks at the potentials for electricity production from the waves. As your visit draws to a close, be sure to check out the magnificent panorama over the Pacific Ocean from the back patio. This area also hosts concerts during the summer Green Flash concert programme.Driving directions to Birch Aquarium can be found on the website, and three hours free parking is available for visitors. There is also a range of public transport options to choose from. Early arrival is advised if you'd prefer to avoid the regular school visits and the queues. Open every day, except major public holidays.
