Check out the exhibits on art, music and poetry at this former power station, now a futuristic hub of innovation and art.

Appearing to levitate, the CaixaForum Madrid is an extraordinary architectural wonder designed by Swiss architects in the early 21st century. Possessing a lively arts center with a restaurant and galleries, this modern and extravagant building stands in a spacious plaza beside the so-called Vertical Garden. Marvel at the use of a former power plant’s walls to create today’s modern and exciting aesthetic.

Notice the details marking the structure that combine to form a blend of modern and rustic styles. The windows from the former power station are filled in with lighter bricks, while a crimson red set of turrets has been added to the top of the building. Replacing the former windows are large rectangular sheets of glass that provide views of the plaza.

See how the building appears to levitate in the air, allowing you to enter beneath its main body. Inside, the shiny corridors and staircases are formed at right angles, creating a futuristic vibe. Make your way through the various halls and galleries, taking in the different interior décor in each space.

Study temporary art exhibits and attend various poetry readings and musical recitals. The structure contains multiple conference rooms as well as an auditorium that seats 322 people. Relax with hot drinks and snacks in the café or have a meal in the restaurant. Browse the souvenirs and books for sale in the shop.

There is a fee to see the exhibitions in this building, which opens daily from morning until evening.

Find the CaixaForum Madrid next to the Madrid-Puerta de Atocha railway station, a little southeast of the city center. Ride the metro to the Estación del Arte and walk northwest for a few minutes to get here. While you’re in the region, stop at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, the Museo de Anthropologia and the Galeria de Arte Félix Cervera.
