About this property
Classic Circa 1929 Estate by Montpelier, Wineries, Charlottesville, Pet Friendly
Welcome to Maple Crest and its newest landscaping and garden updates.
Whether you are visiting UVA or Woodberry Forest, attending a wedding at The Market at Grelen, enjoying the Montpelier races, or simply spending a few days among wineries and history in the rolling beauty of Virginia’s Piedmont, Maple Crest offers a warm and thoughtfully curated countryside stay in the heart of it all.
And yes — pets are welcome.
Originally built circa 1929, Maple Crest has been thoroughly renovated while preserving the warmth and character of an early-century Virginia home. The property changes beautifully with the seasons, with flowering trees, mature shrubs, bulbs, and gardens creating color and texture throughout the year.
The spacious eat-in kitchen is bright and cheerful, with quartz countertops, new appliances, and generous room for gathering. A sunny breakfast nook overlooking bird feeders is the perfect place to enjoy coffee, catch up on emails, or simply watch the morning unfold just outside the window.
The first floor also includes a half bath, a large living room, and a sun-filled sitting room with both eastern and western exposures, ideal for long conversations, afternoon reading, or a quiet evenings as the light changes across the surrounding fields and mountains.
Upstairs are three bedrooms, including one en suite bedroom, along with two full baths. The hall bath features an antique clawfoot tub with shower, while the primary bath includes a walk-in shower.
A utility basement with washer, dryer, and sink is available for guests' convenience.
The house is wonderfully sunny throughout the day, with views of surrounding farms and mountains from nearly every room. Guests often enjoy sunsets from the front porch and sunrises from the back garden with coffee in hand and birdsong in the distance.
Mature boxwoods frame the front lawn, creating both privacy and a classic Virginia landscape well suited for croquet, lawn games, or simply relaxing outdoors. Presiding over the property is the magnificent old maple tree that gave Maple Crest its name, a towering presence that transforms with each season and has quietly watched over the house for generations.
The fenced backyard offers plenty of room for children and canine companions to run and play, while the acre of fenced pasture beyond provides open space for field sports and seasonal wandering among flowering trees, shrubs, vegetables, and whatever may be blooming at the moment.
Maple Crest sits among working farms and quiet countryside roads, where the sounds of chickens, tree frogs, crickets, and the occasional passing train are all part of the historic rhythm and character of rural Virginia life.
Despite its peaceful surroundings, Maple Crest is located only minutes from some of Central Virginia’s most treasured destinations, including:
The Market at Grelen James Madison’s Montpelier Barboursville Vineyards Charlottesville wineries and restaurants scenic hikes and drives antiques and local farm markets UVA and Woodberry Forest

We would give this house 10 stars if we could! Everything about our stay was truly impeccable. From the moment we walked through the door, the house felt like a home, not just a rental. Owners John and Gaby (who we had the chance to meet at the Montpelier Hunt Races - they are lovely) have thought of every detail, from the careful labeling which took all of the guesswork out of finding which light switch to use or which drawer contained which utensil, to the thoughtful and tasteful design. The mattress was so comfortable we actually took a photo of the label. A great home in a great location. We cannot recommend this place more highly (and we have stayed at a lot of rentals both in the Shenandoah Valley and worldwide). We will definitely plan to stay here again in the future and will recommend it widely.
We stayed at Maple Crest on short notice due to an emergent situation in our neighborhood. John and Gabi were very accommodating and our stay was everything we wanted and needed. The sheets were the softest I’ve ever slept on and the kitchen was the most well supplied I’ve ever seen. Thank you for having us and our dog!
House was wonderfully appointed and super clean. It was very spacious and accommodating. Hosts were wonderful and very easy to communicate with. Fenced in backyard was very much enjoyed by our dog. We even got to enjoy some fruit and vegetables for the garden by the house. 10/10 would recommend and we look forward to our next stay.
We stayed here for the wedding of our daughter, which took place at the nearby Market at Grelen. We had a fantastic experience--everything we needed was here, including space for our dogs to run around safely. The hosts could not have been more gracious and the communication was excellent. We stay a many VRBO properties and I have never seen one so well appointed. We were able to have the family over for dinner and everyone fit around the table with matching plates! The area is peaceful and gorgeous--sunrises while sitting in the sunroom start your day off right. Beds are comfy and plenty of towels and pillows. A true home away from home. The area has lots of breweries and wineries and the town of Orange has some quaint spots. For a quick getaway from NOVA to unplug and refresh--I would highly recommend. And if you are doing a wedding at Grelen--you cannot get more convenient. 2 minute drive.
This home is every bit as beautiful in person as it is in the pictures online. Perhaps even more so. It is super clean and very well stocked. It is decorated very tastefully and you just feel at home as soon as you walk in the door. The owner even put fresh cut flowers throughout the house for us, which was such a lovely touch. The kitchen appliances are excellent and we had everything that we needed. The owner has thoughtfully put labels around the house anywhere you might need to figure out where things are kept, or how something might operate. That thoughtful touch eliminated many of our questions and helped make staying there really easy and such a pleasure. The yard is r landscaped beautifully, and the house faces West where the sun sets over the mountains. The fact that it’s dog friendly with the nicest fenced dog yard was such a blessing for us. Everything about this home was perfect for our family of six to enjoy. I included a few pictures of the setting so you can see how pretty it is.
This was one of the most beautiful homes I have never rented! The yard was perfect for our golden doodle. The charming historic feel along with the country the views were breathtaking. The cleanliness and organization had a Spa like vibe & was like no other property I have rented. Everything you need from home available for your use. My favorite room was the sunroom, where you could watch the sunrise and sunset in a beautiful library like cozy room.
thank you so much John and Gabby for such a beautiful experience.
This was truly one of the most delightful VRBO stays we have ever had. The home is nearly 100 years old and has been updated perfectly to retain its original charm while offering just the right dose of bright, modern touches. Sunlight streams in freely through the plentiful windows offering beautiful views of the surrounding Virginia countryside and mountains. A spacious pup yard for the dog was much appreciated. A lovely and well equipped kitchen, spacious bedrooms, and super comfortable beds were just part of our experience. Every unique detail added to our enjoyment. We only wish we could have stayed longer! About 15 minutes to Orange where you'll find all of your in town conveniences including fine dining, 20 mins to Woodberry Forest and about the same to Montpelier where we attended the annual Hunt Race. The Owners were generous, thoughtful and easy to communicate with. All in all a perfect fall weekend in the Virginia Piedmont with plenty of credit given to the accommodations!
A wonderful house, thoughtfully updated and prepared for guests. Almost next to a train crossing, which was nirvana for our train-crazy seven-year-old. We had a great experience.
Amazing property and amazing hosts! The perfect home away from home for our daughter’s wedding at Grelen. We were able to use their basement for our flower prep and even bring the couple dog that was the ring bearer. 10/10 recommend!
The home is as clean and beautiful as it appears in the photos. John and Gabby were wonderful hosts, and the check-in/check-out process could not have been easier. The fenced backyard came in particularly handy for our dogs.
Our family had a great time! The host was quick with answers on the few questions we had. The house was beautiful and no detail had been left unattended. We will def stay there again.
We loved the property and the house had everything we needed. The hosts were extremely friendly and accessible. We would definitely recommend this property to anyone. Worth mentioning that trains run on a track that is close to the property.
A lovely house in a lovely setting. This was our second trip to this beautiful property. The hosts made our stay extra special. The check-in process was simple. We were welcomed with fresh flowers and even a bottle of wine for us to enjoy. We highly recommend a visit to this special spot.
This is a great house! Clean, comfortable and centrally located. We enjoyed many historic sites in Virginia, wineries, and even drove into DC. All day long trips, and this was such a welcome house and property to return to! The owners are so kind and responsive. If ever in the area again, we would definitely return.
Wonderful Thanksgiving celebration in VA countryside
My family gathered here for Thanksgiving celebration as a central spot and we couldn't have been more pleased! Dogs loved the fenced yard, we had a outdoor fire Thanksgiving night, toured wineries and Monticello, hiked around the Montpellier estate. Wonderful all around and we will be back!
Beautifully decorated and exceptionally clean farmhouse in the countryside.
The home was stunning - so much natural light and lovely views. As far as VRBO rentals we have had, this is by far the cleanest with everything anyone will need for their home away from home. No issues whatsoever. Enjoyed our stay and would like to come back for a longer visit one day.
John & Gaby were super accommodating and responsive…the little extra touches for all members of our family (including our dog) were so thoughtful! New updated furnishings and everything neatly labeled and easy to find. Great location in the heart of everywhere we needed to be during our stay. Definitely consider Maple Crest if you find yourself in the area!
Lovely place to stay while attending UVA graduation events. Gorgeous, well-appointed house with beautifully-landscaped, spacious yard and even a large fenced-in portion for our little dogs to roam in. Wish we had time to have cooked a meal or two in the kitchen, but I hope to come back again with friends for a wine and antiques weekend. The charming town of Orange is just a few miles away, and there are lots of wineries all around. Thank you to the hosts for sharing your lovely home with us.
August at Maple Crest was a fantastic experience: wonderful house and property, hosts, location
I stayed at Maple Crest with my daughter and her two dogs for 5 weeks this summer. It was terrific. The house is wonderful - fully equipped with everything you can think of and/or need. It is bright and cheerful. The property is beautiful and our dogs loved the fenced - in yard. Loved the tomatoes and eggplant from the garden!! Gaby and John are so friendly and the most responsive hosts I have ever had. Every detail was attended to - I was working from the house for the month of August and they even set up a work space for me in the house.
The house is well located - close to Orange, Gordonsville and Charlottesville. We visited 2 wineries, Montpelier, loved Grelin Market/Nursery (and walks with the dogs), Monticello and more. I can't say enough about this house, property and the hosts. I hope to be back in the future. Hats off to Gaby and John for a first-class experience!
