Iroha Grand Hotel

Iroha Grand Hotel

10/10 Excellent
"The hotel is very well located, near the train and bus stations. We could walk to the castle in 10 minutes. The area felt safe and calm. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable. We appreciated the amenities available for free in the reception area. The laundry area was useful (though busy). The staff helped us arrange luggage transfer to Magome and stored our backpacks after check out when we went to tour the city. This is a very good choice for a trip to Matsumoto and the price is fair for the quality of the room."

Shirafune Grand Hotel

Shirafune Grand Hotel

"If you want a traditional Japanese experience and get away from the main towns, then this hotel is for you. Yes, you can take the Western rooms, but the Japanese rooms will give you a better local vibe. If you take the breakfast and dinner option, then be prepared not to eat anything else. They supply yukata's and belts and you'll feel more comfortable being in traditional garb. It's a slog out and back to Matsumoto, so just make that a one-off day trip. Hirayu is much closer (15-mins) now the tunnel is open, but that only really swings in peak season. There are walks everywhere. For the more adventurous the start of one of the Mt Yuke Duke (volcano) walks is about 20 mins away on the old 158. It's a 7 hour round trip up and down. Plan to start at say 7-8am. Parking is limited, but they will always find you a spot and bring your car to you."

Onsen Lodge Watari

Onsen Lodge Watari

10/10 Excellent
"This place had the feel of a "best-kept-secret"; gem-of-a-find type place. Everything about staying there was fascinating. As the management, to their credit, explicitly warns on their listings, the structure is old and rustic. But this wasn't a deterrent in any way, it adds to the charm and they do an excellent job keeping it clean, well maintained and accommodating. As a westerner looking to explore some backwaters parts of Japan and stay in a traditional Onsen ryokan that is not a tourist trap, this was the perfect best-of-both-worlds fit. The manager spoke good English and was helpful so that there was no confusion or culture shock, but none of the authenticity was compromised. I would certainly stay there again, even go out of my way again - drive up to the mountains - in order to stay there if overnighting en route to or from Tokyo southward."

"Breakfast was very good but very crowded Staff was friendly and very helpful. Unfortunate we couldn't store luggage at the hotel after checkout and had to rent a storage locker at the train station until 3pm."

"We absolutely loved our stay at this wonderful hotel. The room was spacious, beautifully designed, and incredibly comfortable — a perfect place to relax and unwind. The meals were truly exceptional and among the most special dining experiences we had during our trip. The hotel is located in a charming little town that feels almost as if it were taken straight out of a movie. The atmosphere, surroundings, and attention to detail made our stay feel very special. A beautiful and memorable experience"

"From the very start to the very finish of our stay, my family and I felt so very welcomed. The hotel was extremely clean and orderly. This particular hotel is very cozy. Morino Hotel

Morino Hotel

8/10 Good
"Our experience with this hotel was overall good! Staff was kind and friendly, facilities were a little dated and the lighting inside the room needs updating, pure white light is not the most pleasant, however the traditional Japanese bedroom experience was very cool! Breakfast was also awesome! That alone made this experience super cool!"
