La pile est un haut édifice (29,50 m), de base carrée, construit en brique. Elle présente des motifs géométriques à la partie supérieure de sa face sud, du côté Loire. Des fouilles récentes ont permis la découverte des restes d'une terrasse du côté nord, d'un bâtiment et d'une statue identifiable à la représentation d'un captif oriental. L'ensemble, fin IIe siècle ou début du IIIe, semble confirmer l'identification du monument à une pile funéraire. The stack of Cinq-Mars is a stack of Roman funerary second or third century.
