"Loved out triple room, windows on two sides looking over the water. Large bathroom that you accessed through what looked like a wardrobe door. Beautiful old building with lovely architectural feature. Breakfast was very nice. The only issue we had was that we were a bit cold at night (it was late March) and although we understood that the central heating wouldn’t be pumping at that time of year, we asked reception for more blankets and were just told no. Didn’t ruin our stay but I don’t think we were asking for too much there."

"The hotel has a deadline for check in by 7PM. But the trains in Italy no longer run on time. We arrived to Milano 1:35h late, and missed our connecting train to Varenna. We barely got into the 6:20 train which meant we were late for check in. When we arrived, Rita arranged for two of her staff to help us out. They showed considerable courtesy and even made us a light dinner. The room was functional with a goof bathroom, air conditioner, a small fridge and they added a free bottle of wine for good measure. The breakfast was very nice and the staff continued to be very nice throughout. Highly recommended."

"Of the six hotels that we have stayed in on this trip, this hotel was by far the most expensive per night and by far the biggest disappointment. Service was on pm par with star hotel. Our room had a lot of gnats in the bathroom. They were flying all over the mirror and into the soap. They were many of them in the sink. The shower floor had loose tiles and water was seeping up from underneath it. There were puddles in the bathroom during the night. Not sure where they came from, but probably from underneath the floor where the shower tiles were leaking The room had a real funky smell to it. When they put a room freshener and it was much better, but that only lasted about 12 hours and the smell came back. The hotel management was not very receptive to our feedback. This is not a hotel that we would return to."

"The pool lounger system is the one major flaw here, and it needs fixing. Guests go out around breakfast, leave belongings on loungers, and effectively reserve them for the entire day - often while the loungers sit empty for hours. At peak times, this creates long queues, and you can expect to wait 1-2+ hours for a lounger (even though many sit empty) simply because others are hoarding spots. Management needs to enforce a clear time limit for unattended loungers and stop guests from “saving” chairs for friends or family who are not actually at the pool. The current setup is frustrating, unfair, and well below the standard of the rest of the hotel. Pool service also needs improvement. Food was delivered to the wrong guests several times, and some of our orders were incorrect. That said, we had an amazing stay overall. The rest of the property is excellent: restaurants and bars are lovely, the food and drinks are great, and the concierge, front desk, restaurant, and wider hotel staff were attentive, professional, and clearly experienced. This is a beautiful hotel with excellent service in most areas, but the pool operation is a serious weak point and should be addressed."

"A wonderful lovely place to stay!! Clean room, property, dining area, pool. Everything about Royal Hotel was amazing. Staff were lovely and helpful and the meals were delicious and interesting and the setting inside and outside for dinner and breakfast were wonderful!! Thank you thank you so much!! We recommend and would go back again."
