1898 Victorian Bungalow Nestled at the Base of Pikes Peak-Near Attractions
Take a step back in history as you stay in one of the earlier-built homes in Cascade. Relive part of the history of the canyon and our family’s connection to Cascade as you look at the old photographs on the walls and leaf through the books on the mantle or the picture albums on the family trunk. Pretend you are sleeping under the 1870’s hand-woven throw that is displayed on the wall in the guest bedroom; or try to determine the origin of the pencil drawings on the framed muslin chair cover which was found underneath the replaced upholstery of the ladder back chair in the living room. And then picture all of this while enjoying the modern conveniences of the 21st century.
Raphael’s Retreat (elevation 7,548’), at the base of Pikes Peak and surrounded by the Pike National Forest, offers its visitors the best of all worlds. Though only minutes away from US Hwy 24, you forget that you are near civilization as you relax on the large porch or on the back deck and hear the nearby stream, gaze at the surrounding pine-covered mountains, or watch the hummingbirds as they fight for food at the feeders. Walk a small distance and let your children enjoy hours on the Cascade Community Park playground. Stroll a little beyond, and stick your feet in the cold stream. Grab one of the several hiking sticks and venture to the trailhead of the Heizer trail to test your hiking abilities or take an easy climb up to Mother’s Rest. Everything you could ask for--all within walking distance of your front door!
Inside, Raphael’s Retreat is furnished with everything you might need during your stay. Wake up in the mornings, look out any of your bedroom windows, and see yourself surrounded by the mountains. When not out visiting the many attractions in the area, entertain yourself with board games, books, old movies, and of course, cable and Wi-Fi (NOT AVAILABLE 1/3/256-4/17/26). Take a break from eating out by taking advantage of the fully-stocked, remodeled kitchen or grill up a delicacy on the charcoal grill. And, finally, after a busy day, enjoy either a bath or a hot shower in one of the two bathrooms.
Of course, venturing out by car will take you to the many places of interest in the area, as well. Be sure to check out a sampling of those activities under the “LOCATION” section of our listing. Additionally, we have provided you with notebooks about local restaurants and activities (no matter what your interests might be) in the wooden tray on the coffee table. There are also numerous books above the fireplace that will help you find spots to hike and explore.
We have owned Raphael’s Retreat since 2012, but you will learn that our story in Cascade began many years before then. We were finally fortunate to find this retreat from our daily lives and now spend approximately three months each year in our second neighborhood. How lucky we were to find a home with such character and utility, a garden to work in, and the best neighbors you could ask for. We are excited to be able to share our home and the wonder of Cascade with travelers such as you.
**As stated in the amenities, please remember there is no land line phone. Verizon, AT&T, and T-mobile are the three cell phone services that work in the canyon. Other services may work but if they do not you must go to Hwy 24.
Guests' Comments: (See more current ones under "Reviews"): 7/2013 "There is not much down time in our real world. Our visit to Raphael's Retreat was a much needed break from the norm. We hiked a little, splashed a little, and enjoyed many laughs. Our family couldn't have had a better time. Thank you for a family vacation we will remember always." 9/2014 "Sally and Tom, you've created a perfect haven here in Cascade. Everything about your home was easy, comfortable and welcoming. The details reflect you in little ways that seems so familiar--family photos (historic!), pottery and artwork-very meaningful. Your yard and garden are a wonder--the bees and birds were all very buzzy and busy--and I love your bottle rail on the deck!" 12/2014 "We had a fantastic family Christmas at Raphael's Retreat! I was so excited when we arrived and saw how lovely and cozy the house is. We logged a lot of time in the kitchen cooking some of our favorite family meals and around the table playing games and laughing until our cheeks hurt!"

We had a great time staying here. Location was convenient to everywhere we visited. Property was clean, cozy, and comfortable. Kitchen was sufficiently well-equipped and we were able to cook most of our meals there. Host was wonderful to work with.
Raphael's Retreat is an amazing getaway. This was our second stay and it was even better than the first time. We stayed in April before (and loved it), and our recent September stay gave us warm, beautiful weather and coffee every morning with dozens of hummingbirds as entertainment. We have family in Colorado Springs and this is our number one choice whenever we come. BONUS: Walking distance to "Wines of Colorado" - amazing food and beautiful setting.
We loved this cottage. It was spacious and clean and we had everything we needed. It is in a quiet neighborhood in a wooded area. We loved being close to many hiking trails and Manitou Springs. It was the perfect getaway for my family. Sally sent us detailed instructions and the house had plenty of books, maps, and handouts to find activities ans hiking trails.
Lovely house among the pines. It quickly became my routine to drink my coffee on the porch, look at the trees, and enjoy the hummingbirds play. The historic house is lovingly maintained and very comfortable. Wish we could have stayed longer!
Everything was wonderful; all the little amenities that make a stay a "home away from home" was thought of. Central enough to drive to the sights we were interested in including on our vacation. Secluded in a quiet kind of way. Would highly recommend.
Fantastic views, very organized and clean, and close to many of the attractions! Was great watching the hummingbirds with the mountains in the background while drinking coffee on the patio. 🙂
Not only was the home beautiful and well-maintained, but the owner was also wonderful and easy to reach out to. Excellent communication, wonderful accommodations. Would 10 out of 10 recommend.
This was a perfect getaway cottage for our family. The location was great for easy access and short car rides to the sights. Sally, Tom and Donald were very responsive when needed and we had an excellent experience and stay in Raphel's Retreat!
Thank you!
We stayed at the 1898 Victorian Bungalow from September 3rd through the 8th. What a beautiful immaculate home and property. The location was outstanding for getting to just about anywhere in a very short period of time. The whole rental process was flawless, along with communications with the owner and property manager rated excellent. We would highly recommend this property and we look forward to returning next year for some more of beautiful Cascade and Colorado!!
We had a great stay. The house was clean and everything orderly and labeled. Communication prior was great. The house was spacious and comfortable. My 9 year old loved staying in the attic room. We were minutes from everything we wanted to do - Cave of the Winds, North Pole, Garden of the Gods and Pikes Peak. The neighborhood was quiet and our stay was great.
Beautiful home settled in the mountain area and near the road to Pikes Peak, which is an awesome experience. Has nearby attractions, such as the Garden of the Gods, Old Colorado Springs and Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, plus a variety of hiking trails. Couldn't ask for a nicer place to stay. I'd like to say a big thank you to Tom and Sally for allowing my friend and I share their wonderful home!!! We hope to return again!
We really enjoyed our stay at Raphael’s Retreat. It was close to all the places we wanted to explore such as the beautiful Garden of the Gods. There are local places to eat in Cascade, Green Mtn Falls and Woodland Park. Easy access to grocery stores and a short drive from Manitou Springs. Both the host, Sally and her property manager, Donald are very responsive and go out of their way to make sure you have everything you need for your stay. Lots of amenities and one of the cleaner places we have rented. We were very comfortable and would not hesitate to stay again.
Property was convenient to all local attractions in the area but maintained a quiet and homey feel. There was nothing that we needed and after spending the days touring and hiking it was nice to return to a cozy home to relax and regroup. The home is very organized and has all the essentials for cooking including a few extras geared towards comfort. Morning coffee on the front porch listening to the wind chimes and watching hummingbirds was a delightful experience. Very nice place to gather as a family or individuals. Definitely would return in the future!
We chose to visit an older brother in Colorado Springs. Brother Jim has lived in Co. Springs for many years and knows the whole state. Retired out of the Air Force Jim first showed us around the Air Force Academy. For the rest of our stay we traveled to many interesting areas and spent several mornings hiking in The Garden of the Gods.
Our house in Cascade was the perfect landing spot after the busy roads and small towns.
We absolutely enjoyed the stay at the Cascade house. The owner, Sally, is amazing to work with. The property supervisor, Donald, lives right across the street and stopped by to introduce himself. Very pleasant. The house is lovely inside and out. It is so convenient for the plans we had in Manitou Springs and Colorado Springs. We loved the cog railway to Pikes Peak, eating at Walter's 303 Pizza in Colorado Springs, Art of the Spirits Distillery in CS and the chuckwagon dinner/show at the Flying W Ranch. Wish we could have stayed longer. We loved sitting on the front porch with coffee in the AM or cocktails in the PM watching the hummingbirds buzz in and out. I cannot say enough good things about this house and our stay. Thank you..
Every year I ask for a nice getaway for Christmas. Instead of getting stuff that ends up in storage, I get to have memories that last forever. This year Santa booked us a nice and cozy home at the base of Pikes Peak. The location was perfect. The owners were so informative and responsive. Would definitely stay here again. Places to eat breakfast, The pantry was delicious, Denver Biscuit company is a must and one of my favorite things to do is visit coffee shops. The exchange had the best coffee that we’ve ever had. Red Dog in Manitou Springs was good too. We spent a lot of time in Manitou Springs which is about 5 minutes away from this property. Dinner or lunch places we enjoyed was Savelli’s and Border Burger Bar. You can do as much as you want or as little as you want. This place was so nice. We will always remember our visit.
This is a great old house that has been updated smartly and outfitted well to host guests. Our family of five loved it. Sally & Tom have thought through everything carefully to share the property well with guests while protecting their interests. We've stayed at plenty of rental properties over the years and the family agrees this one is our favorite. We loved the authenticity of staying in this little neighborhood in Cascade - as opposed to resorts or more touristy areas. It was easy to get to everything in CO Springs, Cave of the Winds, Pike's Peak and all the tourist favorites. But you get to retreat from the tourist laden areas for your home base. My youngest daughter and I loved hiking up to Mother's Rest and the beautiful little falls all around it. Plus we explored some of the other secluded trails around the creek. I want to come back and hike the more serious/strenuous Heizer Trail which starts in the neighborhood and features a 1900 foot climb over the first two miles. And what's amazing is how quiet and hidden this little area is from all the thousands of tourists packing CO in summer. It is so quiet and peaceful and beautiful. But whether hiking is a priority or not, you will love this location and the house. Kitchen is well stocked and they are generous sharing spices & staples so you don't have to buy/bring "every little thing." Bathrooms and bedding are nice. And our youngest (10y.o.) loved climbing up to and sleeping in the loft each night.
This little mountain house has been meticulously updated with very nice finishes and many extras that make traveling easier. Although we did no do much cooking this trip, if we had, the spices and condiments available would be a very big plus. Not having to drag along or buy these things would be very helpful. I think the only such thing I used was a teaspoon of sugar for my coffee--but I was very happy that it was there.
We were not around the property all that much but we did enjoy breakfast on the front porch and watched the MANY hummingbirds. My son noticed an empty feeder and followed the instructions to refill it.
Although we did not notice at first, there are plenty of extra sheets and towels. The house is immaculate and very well organized.
The loft bedroom is very cute, and a little strange, which added to the character of the home in our opinion, although it was a little warm at night. The outside temperature was very high when we visited (I think unusually high). There's no AC, but windows open in the loft and fans were available and working in all three bedrooms.
We overall really enjoyed staying here.
Fantastic location for the Pikes Peak Race. Came with co-workers for a few days and this rental had everything we needed. Great communication from the owner with all my questions prior to booking and through the rental weekend. Would stay again.

This property was so beautiful and just what we needed as we came into town to visit our grandma. Very cozy and location is amazing. We will definitely stay again.
