Wherever you're jetting in from, flying can be a pleasant experience if you've prepared well. We've compiled a list of handy tips that will get your Ham holiday started on the right note. What to pack in your hand luggage:

• Flying can be a cruisy experience if you take the right things. First things first, you'll need basic toiletry items, such as a toothbrush and lip balm, a fresh change of clothes and a good read. Next, leave space in your bag for your laptop, a charger, your important medications and perhaps a cosy neck pillow too. Last, but definitely not least, remember to take your passport, travel docs and some cash.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Put all your full-sized bottles of shampoo and hair gel in your checked baggage. Any liquids in your carry-on suitcase larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) will be confiscated. Sharp or pointed objects, like your trusty Swiss Army knife, and dangerous products which are explosive or flammable, such as flares, bleaching agents and strong acids, are also restricted.

What to wear on a flight:

• The aisles of a plane are no place for a fashion parade. Layer up with comfy clothing and go for shoes that are enclosed, flat and easy to remove.
• Most of us have heard about deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clotting condition caused by long periods of inactivity. To reduce your risk on board, drink plenty of water, consider wearing compression socks or tights and keep your legs and feet moving.

• Airport security personnel first need to check that you have a valid passport and boarding pass before you can proceed any further. Have them close by, ready for inspection.
• Next up, both you and your carry-on luggage will be X-rayed. To make the process quick and painless, remove anything that might set the alarms off. Personal belongings such as your jacket, belt and headphones need to go through the machine.
• Your electronic gadgets like phones and laptops will also have to go on a tray to be scanned. No need to worry though, you'll be back online in no time.
• Any gels or liquids, such as perfume or toothpaste, that you want to bring on board need to be in containers no greater than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres). They must also all fit inside a quart-size (one litre), clear zip-close bag.
• Slip-on shoes are a practical footwear choice as you're less likely to have to remove them when going through security. Boots and heavier-style shoes are usually subjected to additional screening.
• Avoid taking prohibited items in your carry-on bag. If you have any sharp objects like a pocket knife or tools, pack them in your checked suitcase. They won't be allowed in the cabin.
